4.0 out of 5 stars SENNHEISER HD 202 II IS BETTER
    By I.G on 23 November 2016
I own both Sony MDR XB 450 and Sennheiser HD 202 II. And I used both of them on regular basis for everything (music, movies, voice chats, content creation). I am writing this review after using both of them for 48 days.

    UNBOXING EXPERIENCE :
Sennheiser HD 202 II comes in a plastic case/covering which is kind of disappointing as even the 200Rs cheap headphone also comes in this kind of packaging. I was expecting a good unboxing experience. But unfortunately, there is no box to unbox.
Here Sony takes all the points with its awesome unboxing experience. It was such a delight as I was given a beautiful box in which XB450 comes. Even the insides of the box are so finished and premium looking. But this is something insignificant to performance.

    LOOKS :
Look wise the Sony MDR XB450 is more attractive than Sennheiser HD 202 II. Sony has more premium looks. But obviously, this depends on person to person and is not that important to many as they are more interested in performance than looks.

    WIRE :
You get 3-meter-long wire in Sennheiser as compared to 1.2 meter in Sony headphones. For managing a long 3-meter wire Sennheiser provides a cable organizer. You can wrap your wire around it for wire management. But it is kind of a hassle and is not practical in everyday life if you go in metros, buses or trains. Here 1.2 meter easily manageable TANGLE-FREE cable of Sony MDR XB450 makes more sense. For mobility Sony is a better choice. But I think Sennheiser specially designed its headphone for home use. For example, its 3-meter wire can be used for late night TV watching. As a content creator, I preferred 3 meter long cable.

    FITTING :
Sennheisers are OVER THE EAR headphones and Sonys are ON THE EAR headphones. I found Sennheisers give more isolation and successfully cuts externally sounds. Although the difference is very minute.

    PADDING :
Padding material in both is good durable quality, super soft and comfortable and to pick the better one on this basis is almost impossible. But here Sennheiser win as it also provides EXTRA PADDING ON HEADBAND. At first I thought it is not that much of a deal but I understood its need when I used XB450 for long hours. I appreciated the extra padding and these small things also show seriousness of the brand. Also, I found out that I can comfortably put Sennheisers for more than 2-3 hrs. On the other hand Sonys are comfortable but I'll prefer Sennheisers for long time use. Again the difference is very MINUTE. The important thing to remember is that, with time the cups start to fit according to shape of your ear in both headphones.

    BUILD :
Build quality of both the headphone speaks of durability. But I will give more points to XB450. Both headphones have used quality material for their builds, whether it is headband or padding. But Sennheiser is all plastic unlike Sony. Better build quality of Sony adds to its weight. 420 gms as compared to Sennheiser's 120 gms. But extra weight of Sony is something insignificant as we are talking about very light weights. Personally, I don't feel any difference in weights. It's more of a specification thing. Build wise I'll prefer Sony.

    SOUND QUALITY :
Let’s come to the main thing that is sound quality, which is AWESOME in Sennheiser.
Nowadays people are more into earbuds and earphones because of their mobility and easy manageable qualities. Or many don’t even rise above the 500Rs budget. For them, both Sony and Sennhesier headphone will bring new experience like “sound stage” etc.
Sound is so rich in Sennheiser HD 202 II that you can differentiate between different instruments playing in an orchestra. You can listen to smallest of small sounds. In music, you can hear fingers touching guitar string before they vibrate to give music. Just imagine, how low is the sound of fingers touching guitar string.
Similarly, I was able to hear echo in many videos which were shot in a big hall.
In movies, you will hear sounds as the audio director wants you to listen. Which in turn enhance the movie watching experience.
The bass is good but not extreme. Don’t get me wrong, these are above 1500Rs headphone, so there is bass is lot better than its cheaper brothers. Also, it doesn’t sacrifice quality for bass. I enjoyed its bass in all high bass genre songs. But it’s definitely lower than Sony MDR-XB450. Which is obvious as the XB in name stands for Extra Bass. Which brings me to the sound quality of Sony headphones.
Quality wise they are a little bit lower than Sennheisers. You will feel this in many places like while watching movies and youtube videos. But don’t get me wrong again, these are also above 1500Rs headphone and have much better sound quality than their cheaper brothers. In music, they get some extra points for their bass. But at many places I noticed that it sacrificed quality for bass. But this can also depend from person to person. Some want quality, some want bass.

    WHO SHOULD BUY WHAT :
The question comes down to, who should buy what. The answer is very simple, if you know what you want.

But firstly, I will like to say that, everyone will benefit who is rising above the 1000Rs mark, from both of these headphones. You will definitely feel good upgrading your sound quality buying both of them. The question is about choosing between them.

Anyone who is in content creation (music, youtube videos, voice-overs), instrumental music, vocals, movie watching and night-time TV watching must seriously consider Sennheiser HD 202 II.
Anyone who is in music listening with high bass and puts mobility as must have feature, with casual movie watching and youtube viewing and doesn’t mind a little dip in quality must choose Sony MDR-XB450. Specially with its tangle-free wire and foldable cups, which enhances its mobile capabilities. And here Sennheisers fails miserably with their 3-meter cable and cable organizer.

    PROS :
Sennheiser has quality and Sony has bass.

    CONS :
Sennheisers are not that good for mobility and Sony are not that good in quality.

I enjoyed both of them and will not regret buying them. But I will still choose Sennheisers as my everyday use headphone.
Sony headphones will go, where all my extra stuff goes. To my brother 
