5.0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Mirrorless Cameras in the Market.
Reviewed in India 🇮🇳 on 20 March 2015
Sony A6000 is one of the hottest mirror-less cameras in the market. I have been using this for a few weeks now, and had enough shootouts to pen a review.

A6000 is replacing not one, but two cameras - Nex 7 and Nex 6. A6000 boasts a lot of great features. It has a fast hybrid auto focus system, 11FPS continous shooting, 24MP APS-C size semsor etc. The camera is very compact and easy to carry. It has a nice grip and never once i felt like i am gonna drop this thing. The compact nature of this camera allows you to go out and shoot without getting a lot of attention. Most people would look at it as just a point and shoot camera.

    #Kit Lens
Before talking about the image quality of the camera, i would like to point out certain things about the kit lens. Most reviews of A6000 online is done with it paired with a high quality Zeiss glass or Sony glass. So when you get this, you need to keep in mind the normal kit lens on any camera is not of that high quality. The kit lens provided has a 3.5 - 5.9 aperture which is quite normal for a kit-lens. Close focusing is not that great, you need to zoom in to get a macro like shot. But keep in mind, your aperture would be at 5.6 when all the way zoomed in. Overall image quality of this lens is fine, not exceptional. It's a kit lens and you shouldn't expect it to outperform other high quality zeiss and sony lenses.

In good lighting conditions, this lens produces good quality images. I was able to take good landscape photos as well as portraits during day time. If you find a lot of noise in your pictures restrict your iso to a lower one. I usually put this on Auto ISO ( 100 - 1600 selected ).During night time you can use "Hand Held Twilight" or "Night Scene" mode from the Scene Selection Mode to take better photos. You can also try HDR to expose your photos better. If you are not that interested in tweaking settings like shutter speed, iso, aperture etc Intelligent Auto mode and Superior Auto mode performs quite well. Using a tripod + long exposure, you can create many cool creative photos out of this ( you would be needing an ND Filter ).

With any lens,Auto Focus works great on this camera. If you are not satisfied with the sharpness or areas the camera is focusing even after adjusting the focusing areas in the menu, enable Manual Focus and focus peaking, and rotate the lens ring to focus on the subject you want ( By default the ring does zooming ).

    #A6000 Image Quality
Pair this camera with a high quality lens, you would be amazed to see how good the image quality is. If you are not interested in heavily investing in expensive lenses, find old school used minolta lenses for cheap and pair it with A6000 using an adapter. You can also use your Nikon or Canon lenses on this via adapters. However when you are using this type of combination, auto focus wont work as many of the old lenses do not support that. Manual focus works really well and Sony has this great focus peaking feature ( enable it in the menus ) that highlights areas in focus. If your camera is not detecting the old lens attached, make sure you have enabled "Release w/o Lens" from the Menu ( 2nd Tab - 3).

    #A6000 vs Nex 6 vs A5100
Sonyalphalabs reports there is hardly any notable difference in the image quality on Sony Nex-6 and A6000. There is difference in resolution though as Nex 6 only has a 16MP sensor while the A6000 has 24MP. One other notable difference internally is Nex-6 is powered by a Bionz processor while the A6000 comes with the newer and more powerful Bionz X. Nex 6 has a better resolution EVF - Electronic View Finder, but the difference is hardly noticeable between the two. So if you are not wanting to have this hybrid auto focus system, it's better to get Nex 6 which is selling for around Rs 38,000 in India. It comes with the same kit-lens as A6000.

Another camera to compare this with is Sony A5100. This has the same 24MP sensor, Bionz X, and auto focus system as the A6000 - hence almost the same image quality. I would recommend getting A6000 over A5100 though as 1) A5100 lacks custom buttons on the back 2) only supports 6FPS. 3) No view finder , so when in direct sunlight you would find it difficult to take photos.

    #Video Quality
Video Quality is excellent on A6000 and the Auto Focus works really well. Again with the kit lens, you would be disappointed with it's close focusing abilities wide open. The on board microphone is quite good too. However there is no mic jack to plugin an external mic to get better audio quality. If you really want an external mic,you can buy Sony external mic though which can be attached to the multi purpose hot-shoe.

    #Built in Flash
Built in Flash is always a nice thing to have. This flash is flexible - i would recommend bouncing the flash off the roof rather than pointing this thing straight at the subject to achieve very well, evenly exposed photos.

The seller i bought from provided a small Carry bag along with it. There is an 8GB Sony Sdcard inside the box.

    #Verdict.
If you are seriously considering buying more expensive fast lenses, i would recommend buying 'Body Only' which would cost around Rs 40K. If this is your first Mirrorless camera, then buy it with the Kit lens as the 18-55m is a nice range to shoot with. Sony A6000 is one of the best Value for money mirrorless cameras out there as of this writing. You should really consider getting a Minolta Lens to Nex camera adapter and search online for old school used Minolta or Leica lenses. They are old,and a bit heavy, but are of good quality and you would probably get it for cheap. I myself grabbed a Minolta 50mm 1.4 Prime lens for around Rs 3000 and is really loving shooting with it and i am in hunt for more good old ones.

Check out some sample photos taken with the Kit lens below.
