Purpose for drive: Light Video editing
Overall Rating = 4
Overall Comment: This drive really lights up on USB3
Installation Rating = 4
The install was easy enough, just plug it in, Win7 will assign it a drive letter and that is it. You may have to format the drive and assign a letter if your system does not "see" it correctly, this is a very fast and easy process as long as you know how, if not they have instructions on their web site. There is no special drivers or required software to use the drive. It includes free back-up software you can download from their site but I have have backup software so I did not try out theirs and can't rate it.
What's In The Box Rating = 5
While it is not mentioned anywhere in the listing it does include a short USB3 cable, the drive, a travel pouch to keep it in on the road, and a mini-manual.
Drive Basic Operation Rating = 5
Nothing special is needed to use the drive, unlike some SSD's this is no need for a pile of utilities to keep it working and healthy, seems to take care of itself, it has a 3 year warranty so if there is an issue you are covered.
Performance Rating = 4
In real-world operation this is performing extremely well, when I copy from an internal SATA II hard drive it hits the hard drive limits, when I copy from a SATA II internal SSD the speed is insane, hitting 265MB/s sustained for a 16GB file, and peaked at 307MB/s. By example, internal SATA II Hard Drive to Hard Drive comes in at 137MB/s.
I got this to speed up video editing, most of it is recorded high def TV, a 30 minute show is a 2-4GB file, a 2 hour movie can hit 16GB, and while editing or scanning it has to read through the file from disk, a typical hour show was taking around 10 minutes to fully scan end to end, with the file on the SSD it is down under a minute. Moving files around, even to or from the HDD, is also substantially faster.
Copying smaller files to or from the hard drive is essentially instant, fast enough that you want to go take a look and see that it really copied it. Any program that reads and writes a lot of data to disk should benefit from the USB3 & SSD speeds.
Note: This is an updated review, my initial review was based on what turned out to be a faulty drive, the performance was degraded it was not dead. Not that I was happy with getting a defective unit, but these things happen and the real measure to me is how the vendor/seller deals with it. I reported my issue to Oyen in one email, they emailed back the same day that it sounded like I might have a bad drive. They exchanged it without question and paid the postage. Overall the product and tech support is as good as it gets, so I did not ding them for the 1st drive in my rating.
UPDATE: 1/7/14: Still no issues and fantastic performance!
I will revisit this review periodically at intervals of the year (of course).
This is my first day using the drive and I am very impressed. I had a Seagate Backup Plus 1TB (platter-disc) that bit the dust for no reason while restoring files (files now gone forever). I won't bother with those details though.
This drive is machine very nicely. The pictures don't show it well, but the aluminum housing is tight and thick all around the drive. It reminds me of the housing used for boutique (expensive, hand-made) guitar pedals.
I've contacted their (prompt) support with questions about whether or not TRIM was supported with this drive. Unfortunately it is not, though their support told me that the drive does utilize other efficiency mechanisms in place that would render TRIM unnecessary. I will accept that and see as time goes forward.
My drive is configured for Mac, extended fs, journaled and encrypted. The speeds I am experiencing via USB3 are ~ 3g a minute. I don't have the inclination or interest to mach the speed per second/mb, but be assured most writes at least 50mb are instantaneous. Remember my drive is encrypted so there is slight overhead as well.
The cable supplied is very thick and shielded. High quality and impressive. The case that it comes with fits it perfectly (along with cable in front pocket), and the construction is heavy duty and padded.
All around a fantastically built (drive & accessories) product. I will revisit if any issues arise.
Even though this is an external hard drive, this SSD could be used for installation of programs, as remains 3-4X faster than a conventional SATA 3 hard drive even in RAID configuration.
I predominantly use this SSD as a backup medium for my operating system with other key program references.
To give you an idea of the overall speed, I was able to back up my entire Windows 7 operating system on this SSD which is roughly 100 GB in under 7 minutes.
Compact size, and very well made, and durable design with slip case.
I am impressed so much by this hard drive, I bought another.
The only downside is overall size and cost, but you get what you pay for, quality and reliability.
SSDs have come a long way in the past couple of years, and this sets the standard.
