The 429s headphones combine natural, well balanced sound with excellent comfort. The microphone works well with my Android phone. Callers sound clear, but a bit robotic with my phone.
With my phone it is possible to obtain moderately loud volume levels, but even at 100% maximum setting the level is still comfortable, not the deafening level most teens prefer. My Nook color tablet can also can push the 429s headphones to a comfortable and moderately loud level, but not to a painful level.
It is bulky, which is typical of around the ear headphones, but lightweight and well padded to allow hours of comfortable listening. The bulky design is fine for home listening but requires a large pocket in a backpack when you are traveling because the earpieces do not fold. The cord looks a bit delicate, so these are really best for home listening.
The well balanced sound does not add extra bass as do headphones aimed at teenagers, but the bass that is actually in the music is reproduced cleanly and accurately. Some other brands of headphones add a large boost in the bass and in the high treble to grab the attention of customers in stores. The accurate sound of a Sennheiser may seem boring at first, but you are hearing exactly what the musicians heard in the studio, with no "dramatic" bass and treble effects added.
The 429HD blocks out noise quite well. On the train, it blocks out conversations around me, but I can still hear the loudspeaker announcing my stop. People sitting next to you will not hear your music at moderate volume levels, but they may hear it slightly if you set the volume at the maximum level.
The very thin and light cord is about three feet long in total, with a 12 inch top section that plugs into a two foot long cord that includes the phone mike. You can replace the two foot long cord with a longer cord that has a standard stereo plug for use with home stereo equipment. The cord ends with a mini plug designed for use with cell phones. The one foot cord lets you connect to a phone in your shirt pocket without extra cord dangling down.
I bought both a new full price 429HD from Amazon.com and have bought a couple of half price refurbished 429HD from Amazon's Pinnacle vendor. The new and refurbished pairs look and sound identical. Oddly, Pinnacle shipped one pair in just a plastic bag and shipped the other pair in a sturdy box.
The half price refurbished 429s from Amazon's Pinnacle vendor are the biggest bargain you will find in the world of headphones. Most headphones that sound great will cost three or four times the Pinnacle price.
-They're comfortable. The over-ear is really nice and cushions over long periods of time. The padded headband is good. But it does give you a weird case of headband-hair.
- There is fairly good noise isolation. Not great. Not bad. Very little sound leak.
- The sound is great, but not amazing. Much better than others, not as good as some high-end ones.
- I got mine for under $40, which was a steal
-The cord is relatively short. I don't generally mind, but if you spin and it gets caught you're in for a surprise and your office will find out what music you like REALLY fast.
- The sound, especially the bass leave a little to be desired
-They don't fold. I don't care. But others might.
If you can snag a pair for cheap like I did, its worth it. They suit my office needs just fine. If you're expecting a $500 headphone, than you're going to need to spend more. But if you want a $75 headphone for $40, go for it.
