Bestselling author Prakash Iyer uses simple but powerful anecdotes and parables from all over the world to demonstrate what makes for effective personal and professional leadership. Iyer draws lessons from sources as diverse as his driver, a mother giraffe, Abraham Lincoln and footballers in the United Kingdom. He shows how an instinct to lead can be acquired while flipping burgers at a fast food chain. All of these stories come together in an explosive cocktail to unleash your inner leader.

Too many cliches, some parts and stories are still enriching . Some of these feel like motivation analogies that you can pick up from Youtube/Google as well. Was expecting more..

For people like me who are not avid readers, The Secret of Leadership is a very pleasant experience in reading. Filled with short stories, anecdotal in style, it shares with us nuggets of wisdom in discovering our own strengths.
Leadership is ‘OEM-fitted’ in us, but seldom is it tapped into. Out of fear of failure or rejection, or lack of will to try out or experiment, we tend to do lead a life that's filled with thoughts of limiting forces and unfulfilled aspirations. We tend to believe that what is missed by us is more worthy than what we got, or what we are doing is less useful than what we should be actually doing.
This book relates to such thoughts, which become habits. How do you therefore break-into your vast reserves of talent and unleash them in your lifetime. In that sense, this book is ‘must-read’ for budding managers, talented individuals, who think they deserve much more out of their lives. Ancient tales and folklore are juxtaposed with situations from the corporate world, that help in understanding concepts quite easily.
In the early part of the book is a fabulous personification of tea bags. It is so graphically analysed that everytime I sip into my favourite tea, I recall a point or two from this story, or should I say, lesson. Simple yet telling in its content about how people behave during testing times. And further, what we ought to know about ourselves when confronted with difficult moments.
The foreword by the legendary Rahul Dravid is therefore, very apt. Through his game he symbolized that besides talent, we need to have skills to adapt, passion to stay on, and the courage the scale the highest mountains. The qualities that Dravid displayed in all formats of cricket, were outcomes of his Passion, Hunger and Discipline - PHD as the book refers to. Like that, the author urges us to write our purpose, scale our mountains and work towards our goals with a lot of discipline and be willing to make those crucial sacrifices. Success will then happen, as success does not come to the talented, it comes to the deserving.

In the world bound by laws of nature, staying afloat defying gravity is a challenge. By defying gravity I mean, the many things that pull us down from soaring high or for that matter ‘grounded”. Books like these ring a bell by giving thoughtful insights, stressing on positivity and optimism despite setbacks. The underlying message as from the book is, “if it is to be, it is up to me” a beautiful two letter ten word sentence. Our success in life is solely in our hands even when we try to justify it otherwise. The book divided in 4 sections regarding the leadership outlook, deals with shorts 2 – 3 page insights mostly supported by real life stories.
We only benefit by reading it. When our morale is down, it will bring us back to our path.
