I am not a Sanjay Dutt fan, nor do I hate him. I know him as the slightly aged actor, who often hams on screen, and has given a couple of decent movies in recent times. Whatever positive perceptions I have had for him, I will dislike Sanjay Dutt after reading this. That s what I thought while ordering a copy of Sanjay Dutt: The Crazy Untold Story of Bollywood s Bad Boy. I may have judged the book by its cover (or title). I couldn t have been more wrong. Yasser Usmaan has crafted a seemingly transparent profile of an actor whose entire life, throughout his career, has been virtually dissected and let bare by various media reports. By piecing together a narrative based on interviews of film industry insiders, police staff, lawyers, archivists, etc. the book reads seamlessly with no personal tilt apparent. While reading the book, sometimes you d fall in love with Sanjay Dutt s innocent charm, then hate him for his errant ways, then like him for trying to mend himself, get angry at his foolish behavior and also pity him for the conditions he managed to get himself in. Eventually, you understand the phenomena of Sanjay Dutt, the original Bhai of Hindi Film Industry, and what has kept him going even when he doesn t figure anywhere in the top crop of stars. It is a true roller coaster ride indeed. The book is unputdownable, something which didn t need an interval like a good masala Bollywood film packing solid content. Dutt s life really deserved this book, and definitely deserves that biopic too. This book has kicked my interest in knowing him more closely. I don t know if I m a fan yet, but I like him more now. Probably because I understand him better. --By Aaqib Raza Khan on 30 March 2018

Sanjay Dutt: The Crazy Untold Story of Bollywood’s Bad Boy
When she came out of coma, the first thing she asked was, ‘Where is Sanju?’ Sunil proffered an excuse and phoned Sanjay to take the first flight out of Mumbai. When Sanjay finally arrived, Sunil told Nargis he had a surprise for her. ‘She closed her eyes and I walked in and I just said “Ma?”’ Sanjay said. ‘Her face just changed. She was so happy – she was crying and she held me. Her hands were shaking. She just wanted to come back home.’ Nargis was desperate to catch up and wanted to know everything about what was going on in Sanjay’s life and career. Most of all, she was really looking forward to finally seeing Rocky.
The doctors at Sloan Kettering were confident that she was cancer-free. But Nargis’s immunity was fragile and even a small infection could be dangerous. She was discharged from the hospital and shifted to the Dutts’ rented apartment. There was a time when Nargis was considered the most beautiful actress in India. Her pictures were on the covers of magazines. But back in the apartment, when Nargis saw her reflection in a mirror, she broke down. Her skin was dark and wrinkly and she had lost her hair. Nargis just wanted to go home and leave the nightmare behind in the US.
After Richa’s death, Trishala reached out to her father. Sanjay told an interviewer in 2001 that the ‘most memorable’ phone call of his life was ‘Trishala’s first call to me after Richa had died. She said she misses me and would like to be with me in the USA.’ But living like one big happy family was impossible. Sanjay was on the warpath with his in-laws. He wanted Trishala to move back to Mumbai with him but the Sharmas refused, and another custody battle broke out; accusations and counteraccusations flew thick and fast. Sanjay recalled, ‘They said he is a terrorist. He’s got a terrorist case against him and we fear that he’ll run away with the child.’ Things were reportedly so bad that, according to Sanjay, when Sunil went to New York to meet Trishala, he didn’t go into the house but stood on a street corner and waited for Sanjay to bring her out. ‘My father used to stand far away just waving out at her. So I decided to fight the case,’ Sanjay said.
