That said, despite the fact that I selected it due to a lack of alternatives, I've found it to be EXCELLENT.
This case isn't made of the soft-sided TPU material that it may appear to be made of. It's made of two types of rubbery plastic that are far more rigid than TPU. The outer part is a bit more rubbery feeling than the back, but both have a nice matte finish that resists fingerprints well. The outer part in particular is somewhat grippy.
It's clearly made of two pieces, but they're fused together. It does not appear to be possible to take the two pieces apart, nor does it look like they will ever come apart unintentionally.
Despite having a rubbery feel, the case does not stretch around the phone; instead, the phone kind of snaps into it. The fit is *perfect*, but once it's in, it kind of seems like it would be a pain in the neck to take out again. Cutouts are ample and well-placed. Note, however, that there are no cutouts for the power button or volume rocker. Instead, they are actually covered by the outer (rubbery-feeling) part of the case, which kind of has raised "buttons" itself. These pseudo-buttons actually have a nice, direct feel to them.
--Update: May, 2015--
I originally purchased this case seven months ago (October, 2014), and it is holding up fantastically well. The only wear that's readily apparent are the light scuffs in the center of the back panel, where the phone rests while it's sitting on my desk, but that's only visible upon close inspection.
Honestly, I am so pleased with this case that I may buy a couple more, just to make sure I have one throughout the entire life of the phone... should my current one wear out and/or they stop making these things at some point. I have NEVER had a case last this long. By the way, I bought the same case for my wife (who also has had a 2014 Moto X since the initial release of the phone), and hers is holding up perfectly as well, despite seven months of use.
By the way, speaking of seven months of use, I was surprised to see a negative review stating that the two pieces separated after "normal use". All I can say is, once, I actually did DROP my phone w/ this case (on concrete!) from about 2-3 feet (granted, NOT a very far drop), and the case did its job; the phone was completely unscathed, and the case itself was barely even scuffed.
I was also surprised to see the negative review about the case "yellowing." Mine isn't doing that, and neither is my wife's. (For reference, she carries her phone in her purse, and I carry mine in my front jeans pocket.) I am wondering if the person with the yellowing case is a smoker, as I imagine that exposure to smoke might yellow it. Again - mine's still quite clear.
This case is useless since the phone fell from about a foot of the ground - I was seating on a beach chair which is about a foot from the floor and the phone slipped out of my pocket, at first I was happy that I just got the "case protector" but as soon as I looked at the screen I've seen that my week old phone has a cracked screen.
So there are 3 issues the first is that the screen of moto x is not as strong as Motorola claim it is.
The second issue is the horrific customer service by Motorola which is a long story by it self...
And the third is this case which won't protect your phone even from a foot of fall
I'm happy with the build quality and how it has protected my phone so far during my first few weeks of Moto X ownership. The case fits perfectly to the shape of the phone; there is no slide, and the phone takes above-average effort to remove from the case. The material making up the backing of the case is standard hard plastic, and the outside trim feels a bit softer and has a textured feel. The textured trim allows for better grip, and it definitely helps and feels great. The transition from the hard plastic to the textured trim is uniform with no manufacturing defects or obvious two-piece construction. The case has already protected my Moto X 2nd-gen beautifully from a drop while I was getting out of my Accord.
In-and-out of my jeans pockets is smooth with the occasional snag due to the grippy trim.
Overall, this is a well-designed, affordable Moto X 2nd-gen case that has a good balance of aesthetics, protection, and thickness. I would recommend this case and its other colors/designs to anybody who purchases a 2nd-gen Moto X.
