It arrived in 2 days just before I was on the road for 12 days for work. It hooked up instantly and flawlessly. The first time I went to use it, the up arrow key had come off. I've seen keys fall off over the years on just about every keyboard known to man, not a big deal. However, i noticed that the little mount had two little tabs and they had broken. I managed to make a rig with the broken parts and super glue, as I had no time to wait for replacement parts. I sent an email to Sharkk directly from the road, and they responded the next day asking me for clarification. I responded and asked for them to just send me the key and mounting tab, that the keyboard worked fine and the key was the only thing damaged. They said they'd take care of it, so I was content since I didn't have to send it back. The rep was very courteous and quite accommodating in our email communications. The next day I got an email confirming they had shipped the part. I didn't get home for over a week, however my wife had told me the package had arrived. I didn't ask anything about it, just assuming she saw the Sharkk logo on the replacement part box. I still used the one that I had rigged the key on, and it was still functional. I got home to find they didn't ship me the replacement key, they shipped me a whole new keyboard. I thought it was a bit overkill as I had only asked for a key and the keyboard still worked. I emailed them to ask them about returning the keyboard with the broken key. The next day they responded not to worry about, and enjoy my new keyboard. In this day and age of customer disservice, there are to few companies left like Sharkk that are more concerned about having happy customers than a little nick to the bottom profit line. Not only will I continue to use them, I will recommend them to anyone looking for products they sell. They earned a customer for life on this one. And that's not something often earned from me.
I have used it exclusively on the Apple iPad 3 and the iPad Air.
Build quality. It's not flimsy. Is seems like it can take a bit of banging around in a bag, etc. The undercarriage is primarily metal (appears to be aluminum). The top is plastic as are the keys. The top - especially the bezel - is prone to easy scratches. It would have been nice for them to include a soft case of some sort to protect it from scratches. It would cost them pennies and they could add 50 cents to the price. Overall - except for scratches - it will likely standup well under normal wear and tear.
Backlighting. For a wireless keyboard I think the backlighting is excellent. You can adjust the brightness (off, low or high) as needed for low light or to conserve battery power. There are multiple colors to suit different tastes. It's a nice feature and the one that drove me to purchase it as I often type in low-light conditions.
Tactile Feedback: It's a small, thin keyboard so don't expect the kind of feedback you get on a full-size keyboard. Nevertheless the keys are well-spaced and typing it relatively easy. They take a bit of getting used to - as does any smaller keyboard - but they are better than most.
Battery Life: I haven't logged the battery life but overall I have been very pleased. I have not actually had it die on me yet and I have only charged it occasionally. It appears to charge rather quickly. I haven't taken a long trip yet with it so I may update this with more data as I use it on longer outings.
Distance: The Manual says ten meters. I can't see the screen ten meters away! If I am close enough to type it works. I have not had any issues with distance.
The indicator lights are on the bottom. Not a terrible inconvenience but a bit nonsensical.
There is NO battery indicator. In this day and age - an LCD battery indicator would not add much to the cost but would be a huge benefit. Also - most of my other Bluetooth products trigger the iPad battery indicator but the Sharkk does not.
They tried to build a keyboard to be all to all users. So there are three function keys at the top for "iOS" mode, "android" mode, or "win" mode. I am not really sure what the modes mean and the instructions give no indication. Additionally, the instructions appear to be for an older model as they instruct the user to use "function" + "letter" for the different modes. These same instructions are found on their website. These function keys seem silly to me. They should be user definable instead.
It's rake or slope is almost non-existent. Feet that opened up would be a nice addition. However, with moving parts as large as feet - they are prone to break so there is a tradeoff.
This next point may seem silly to some but here goes. They only put rubber feet on the upper-side of the bottom. Presumably, they did so to prevent the keyboard from slipping as you type. The oversight - however - is that the portion of the bottom that touches the surface is metal! So, it is prone to scratch whatever you put it on. You can, of course, fix this by adding your own rubber feet but when you buy something you shouldn't have to make a trip to Lowes to fix it!
For many, these two will be deal breakers.
First - I have to connect each time. I have to hit the connect button on the keyboard AND go into settings and connect on the iPad. None of my other Bluetooth devices require this. (BTW - I don't mean PAIR - just connect). The most I have to do to another device is hit the connect button on it but not on the iPad.
Second - this is the worst for me. You can be typing along and the iPad will go into lock mode. Let's say you have lock mode set to a 15 minute interval. If you do nothing with the iPad it will automatically lock (some of us call that sleep mode). But with the Sharkk, if you have been typing that entire time, it will still go into lock mode (assuming you have not tapped the screen to reset the time). I have never experienced this on my Apple wireless keyboard. It could merely be a coincidence but I doubt it.
The biggest complaint is an aesthetic one. But you buy this FOR the colors / backlit keys feature, right?
What irritates me about this keyboard is three things:
1) The backlight is NOT automatic, you have to turn it on everytime. After a brief period of inactivity, it will turn off. You have to continue to turn it back on manually. This is nonsensical.
2) There are two levels of brightness for the backlight. If you read 1, you'll see the same thing here. If you like the backlight to the higher setting - know it also will default to the lowest level when the keyboard sleeps for inactivity.
3) Same as the previous two - the problem this time is that the color you set does not stick. So you basically turn this thing on, pick your color, your brightness, and start using it. If you stop typing for a brief period, it sleeps. You wake it up, and all three settings are NOT what you set them to.
Mind, this inactivity period is like 1 or 2 minutes. It renders the main features of this product (or rather, the reasons I purchased it) completely null. It's impossible to enjoy it if you have to constantly excercize futility in setting all three to your desired setting - use the restroom, get lunch, what have you - and you need to do it again.
Needless to say, I don't use it. It's for guests or anyone else that needs a bluetooth keyboard. It will likely rot in my closet.
