The box was also worn out and taped over. It is possible that the vendor sent me a returned piece. Amazon customer service was not much help. Only offered to return it for a refund. (By the way, I have to bear the cost of shipping it back.) There is no warranty card that comes with the product, though Amazon sells it by saying it has 1 year warranty. I am now waiting for Ricoh to hopefully repair it. Ricoh does not seem to have a good service network or trained technicians in Ahmedabad.
Pricing was very attractive so I bought. But the feel of the printer and quality are quite cheap - which why probably it is being sold so cheap. So be very careful about buying this product and read all the reviews before you purchase it.
UPDATE: This printer was DEAD ON ARRIVAL. Pathetically poor customer service by Ricoh. After struggling for 5 days, the printer is still not working. First engineer did not know anything about this printer. Second "Senior" engineer got paper tray issue sorted but the ADF is still not working. Ricoh's customer service call center is terrible too. Ricoh has a "Dead on Arrival" replacement policy on its website where they say they will replace. BUT RICOH IS REFUSING TO HONOUR THEIR OWN POLICY TO REPLACE A DEFECTIVE PIECE MANUFACTURED BY THEM. I think its worth paying a little more to buy an HP or Canon - never had a problem with them like this when their product was DEAD ON ARRIVAL and did not work straight out of the box.
The paper tray was a problem from day 1. Tried all sorts of GSM (thickness) & paper finishes but the tray loader would never catch the paper unless pushed a few times manually. Called a service engineer under warranty and he sprinkled some white powder "apparently to create static charge on the paper catcher". The service engineer said it was the only Japanese fix they had for this problem! This was indeed a temporary fix. Since this is for my home use, i wasn't printing every day. The problem though re-appeared within a couple of months and i somehow lived with this problem for several years because I was hardly printing 1 or 2 pages in a month and I did not have the time to call the service guy again to fix it. Early this month, after almost 3 years living with this pain, the printer refused to take any more paper. Spent several minutes trying to take prints but the printer simply wouldn't take the paper. Called the service center and logged a complaint.
Ricoh support is a scam and the company has piss-poor attitude - all the way up to its MD's office!
The call center at Calcutta told me to approve the inspection charges of Rs 750 + taxes (this excludes spare parts) over an email before they will send anyone onsite. I told them, i would only pay if the problem is fixed. I would not pay 750+taxes ONLY for inspection, when it is quite apparent that the tray loader has broken down and needs replacement. Surprisingly, this is the charge for a printer that only costs Rs 5700! I asked them if you can give me a rough estimate for the spare parts, i would then decide whether its commercially feasible to repair the printer or not, but they refused to provide an estimate either. For example, if the spare parts costs 2000 + 750 against service charges + taxes with only a 7 day warranty period, then i don't think any sane person would want to get it repaired at almost 50% of the printer's cost.
I then wrote to the MD of Ricoh India and someone from his office returned a call next morning trying to tell me that this is their "company policy" and they can't do anything about it. The only option i was given was that if i could take the printer to their service center, then they would inspect & estimate the repair cost free of charges. Well, to me it wasn't worth half day trip either so I left it at that.
My overall experience -
Having owned both HP and Canon printers for over 20 years, i have never had any issues with either of them. They were all very basic, entry level printers that i used only for domestic needs, which is 1-2 odd photocopies / prints in a month. In that case I cannot tell how good / bad is their service policy is, but at least the products did not turn out to be a pain in the ass. The Ricoh on the other side is very flimsy product when it comes to quality, has a very poor implementation / half-baked attempt to all the features / functionalities it has. It wasn't a plug & play printer either, the software version for windows wasnt straightforward, forget about a Mac. Backed by a nasty call center & dubious service policy, I think its a disaster to invest in any Ricoh product. Companies who want to charge you for inspection / visits upfront and not willing to give you any high level estimates, often have spare parts availability issues and this is what i guess is the problem with Ricoh. What happens if the guy comes, inspect and tells me "sir we have to replace the tray loader of the printer", takes the Rs 750 + taxes from you, then tells you "sir i will have to go to office, check and tell you the spare part cost" and leaves. Then you, keep following up for next several days calling several people to point where they will finally say "sir spare part is not available as the company has stopped making your printer model"!
My recommendation -
Stay away from Ricoh for 2 reasons -
a. inferior quality, problem laden product
b. unethical & horrible service support
On the whole it is very good for home use especially at this price range. Always remember to register your warranty on ricoh's website. And yeah thanks amazon for great service.
Print copy and scan are the functions that I have used; I have
not used the fax function yet and may be I will never use it because
I dont need that; It was a little difficult even to find the power switch
and then the paper loading tray which is at the back; the information
brochure that comes with the pack as well as the user manual that
comes with setup CD are not helpful at all; I tried myself but
I could get around to setting up and using the printer without much waste of time.
More efforts should be put in by the company to make user friendly manuals.
