The first CD is mostly recordings from the mid-1950s, and the second and third CDs cover the last 5 years of Jim's recording history, 1959-1964. The producers here did a fine job selecting the running order of the tracks and balancing out the sound elements on the individual tracks (with a few exceptions, e.g. "Distant Drums" is quieter than the preceding track). These are mostly the original album versions with few overdubs, "Distant Drums", "Blue Side of Lonesome" and "That's When I See the Blues" are the overdubbed hit versions from the late 1960s. The vocal clarity on "I Heard A Heart Break" is remarkably good, and after I listened to the entire song, realized it was the original undubbed performance - it's now clear the stereo overdub done in the late 1960s was one of the rare failures to enhance the original performance. In general, I enjoyed all of the overdubbed songs and even entire albums of overdubbed material released after Jim Reeves' death to update and enhance his vocals, but the sound quality here on this set of mostly the original recordings is very warm, pleasant and full.
I think this is the finest mastering and collection of Jim Reeves' original tracks currently available. A bargain price too for 3 CDs. Worth seeking out and finding, remembering this fine singer on the 50th anniversary of his death. Highly recommended.
