The Lion capital of Ashoka is a sculpture of four Indian lions standing back to back. It was originally placed atop the Ashoka pillar at Sarnath in Uttar Pradesh, and erected by the Mauryan Emperor Ashoka around 3rd century BC. The frieze carries sculptures in high relief of an elephant, a galloping horse, a bull and a lion, separated by intervening spoked chariot-wheels (Ashoka chakra) over a bell-shaped lotus. The Lion Capital of Ashoka from Sarnath was adopted as the Emblem of India in 1950.
