Product description

This book seeks to appreciate the trends of imperial perceptions ofIndia and her institutions. Thematically, the drift andpropensities of imperial perceptions etched out here are valid forthe whole period of Raj which was initiated with the assumption ofauthority by the British crown from the East India Company. Thebook attempts to capture the broad parameters and intricate detoursof imperial perceptions of India especially since theover-confident days of the adolescent Raj in the mid-seventies ofthe nineteenth century. Economic power, military authority anddiplomatic ascendancy of the empire were sustained by thecentrality of Raj in British imperial psychology. Britishsensibility with regard to the Raj displayed an arrogant and anauthoritarian programme, quite different from the fraternalfellow-feelings which were displayed towards Australia, Canada, NewZealand, South Africa and Rhodesia. The primary object of the workis to weave a pattern and discover a meaning in imperialsensibility.
