Rumi is not too enthusiastic about accompanying Baba to the sleepy village of Shankerpur, where he is planning to convert their ancestral home into a bed and breakfast. But Rumi is happy to be away from school and friends who have problems understanding Rumi's identity. In the middle of one night, Rumi encounters a ghost--Rain, who does not remember his own story or why he is compelled to be a ghost. And it is in trying to help Rain find his peace, that sets Rumi on a journey of love, friendship and acceptance. This is a tale of love and loss, of rejection and affirmation, and above all, the healing and illuminating power of friendship.

This book was funny, healing, and beautiful to read. This is a graphic storybook and the illustrations add to the nostalgia. The illustrations are in a black and white theme. I loved both Rumi and Rain. These two characters undergo self-discovery, loss, insecurity, rejection from the people around them. They try to accept themselves through this friendship. This book gives a beautiful message to the readers- it’s okay to not fall into fixed boxes of societal standards, it’s okay to be unique. People will always be there to criticize us but we need to accept ourselves, love ourselves, and be confident about ourselves.

Rain Must Fall by Nandita Basu revolves around Rumi, who accompanies their baba to Shankerpur. Rumi wasn't fascinated by the strange village that seems to be in a constant state of slumber but the idea of having some escape from their daily boring school life and a chance to explore their own identity was a prospect they weren't willing to give up on and so they embark on this journey without being aware of what this journey would entail.
The strangest thing happens when Rumi encounters a ghost — Rain in the middle of the night.
Although, they should be the one stumped after meeting the ghost.
It's the ghost who is bewildered because he has no memory of how he became a ghost.
In a strange turn of event, Rumi finds themselves wanting to help Rain set free and give him peace.
Even though, the premise of this story sounds unusual, it has many layers to it which you get to unravel as the plot develops.
A beautiful story of of love and loss, of the isolation that comes with rejection and what wonders simple words of affirmation can do, and above all, the ever bright, ever healing, power of friendship.
I am already obsessed with graphic novels and comics. And a graphic novel that takes different emotions that a human feels and embodies them in the story so beautifully was bound to make me fall in love with it. The story is simple and yet impactful and I'm sure that those who read it will not only enjoy it but that it'd leave a lasting impression on their minds.
I would highly recommend this book to everyone.

"It isn't easy to hug a ghost. it's like trying to hold air between your arms only its colder and heavier. and it's more like you are surrounded by it."
This is the story of Rumi who goes on a vacation with their father. The father is renovating their old house so that they can convert it to a bed and breakfast.
Rumi identifies herself as non binary and her parents doesn't understand and are upset about it. They constantly have arguments regarding this. Rumi feels very lonely because of this.
One day, Rumi finds a ghost in the house. As time goes by she start befriending the ghost and starts finding out about the ghost's past. She soon realises they have a lot in common with the ghost.
This graphic novel was a lovely story about friendship and fitting in our own skin. The story talks about having trouble in fitting in and that feeling of and feeling lonely but finding someone with whom we can be unapologetically ourselves.
I really enjoyed this story. I loved the social commentary within this book and fighting against all odds to be our true self. I think this is particularly important read for the younger audience as this book has many important lessons to teach.
I would highly recommend this wholesome graphic novel.
