KRUPA SAGAR SAHOO is a leading name in Odia literature. Though he started his literary journey with poetry, he has written profusely in many genres, including short stories, novels, essays, travelogues, biography and children's literature. With his twelve published collections of short stories and four novels, he has created a niche for himself in Odia fiction. Many of his works have been translated into English and other Indian languages. Nature and the Railways, where he worked for thirty-four years, and the plight of the common man, are the recurrent themes in his writing. The recipient of many awards, he was given the Odisha Sahitya Academy Award in 2009, for his novel Shesa Sarat, a touching story about the deterioration of the famous Chilika Lake in Odisha. --This text refers to the paperback edition.

Another collection of stories which has been so well written and is relatable to anyone who has travelled from Indian railways atleast once in their lives. The title is also apt and makes one curious to read it further.The cover shows the exact representation of railway be it local station or a junction with loads of people from different walks of life, trains, rustling, noise. everyone running here and there to rush home or some other destination. The cover is really amusing and real which creates one the curiosity to dig into the book as soon as one can. This particular book focuses on stories from the coromandel express. Each story is different and unique from the othet one these stories even have pictures given in the stories which adds to the imagination of the reader. The stories hold the reader together. The narration is beautiful, with good description that one would face when travelling in the trains. All the mess and beauty both of it together with easy to understand words. The stories are amusing and lovely.

Rail Romance is an excellent piece of literary work. The translator of the book in odia has been successful in capturing the essence of the narrative. The graphic description of the journey by Kora Mandal Express, the humorous description of the co - passengers having different attitudes and temperaments, their reactions to the situations makes the journey more exciting and thrilling. Priya Bharati, the translator, has done a commendable job in translating the original odia dialogues in to English and never for a moment the reader loses his grip over the narration. In her debut attempt she has successfully captured the attention and imagination of the readers.

Subtleties and typical flavours in the original works generally get stifled or distorted in a translated version. But not so in this this book; it very succinctly captures the essence of the expressions archetypal to Odia language and culture. Lucidity and smooth flow of narration encourages one to complete the reading at one go and compels to come back to several situations to relive those. I congratulate Ms. Priya Bharati on her maiden venture of translating a classic creation in Oida and hope more are in the offing.

A true rail stories Go for it.....

The recently published ‘Rail Romance’ by Krupasagar Sahoo, an Odisha Sahitya Akademi awardee, is a wonderful collection of ten of his fascinating short stories and one long story ‘Journey by Coromandel Express’ written with the backdrop of the railways. The stories translated into English are a boon for non Odiya readers who can enjoy his storytelling. The translator Mrs. Priya Bharati has retained the original regional flavor which makes it all the more interesting to read.

‘Journey by Coromandel Express’ is a wonderful narrative of an eventful journey through the eyes of a housefly on this famous East Coast train that faces the Super cyclone. The lucid style of writing makes the readers feel they are a part of the ongoing drama inside the different carriages.
The other ten short stories speak of the follies and foibles, joys and sorrows of not just the common public but also the railway workers like the gang men, porters, drivers and officials of every rank including the General Manager! While there are shades of tragedy, poignancy in some stories, there is a good deal of humor adding color to the events and characters without losing the empathetic and sensitive touch so typical of Sri Sahoo’ s writing. All the stories in this paperback edition are bound to keep the readers engrossed throughout.
