Product Description

Everyone has heard of Cleopatra and Boudicca.

But what about the other women who fought their way to power in the ancient world?

The struggle for women to gain recognition within society was an issue no less important in the ancient world than the modern one.

Not only was it incredibly difficult for them to earn the respect and power which their male counterparts were used to, but even those that were not taken as seriously as they should have been by the historians of the time.

For these reasons it has been notoriously difficult for us to know much about these powerful women.

Until now, that is.

In 'Queens of the Ancient World' Ingrid de Haas explores the exploits and successes of twenty-one of the most powerful women of the ancient world - women who made a difference socially, politically, and even militarily, even when they were not in direct command.

She seeks to prove the truth of the idiom that ‘behind every great man there’s a great woman’.

With original research, she strips away myths and legends to tell the real stories by some of history's most forceful personalities.

'Queens of the Ancient World' is an essential read for anyone interested in the story of the ancient world.

'And original and important work.' - Robert Foster, best-selling author of 'The Lunar Code'.

Ingrid de Haas has a doctorate in Roman history from the University of California, and is the author of ‘Roman Arms: Huntress’, 'Take my Order for an Amulet' and 'Female Slave Resistance in the Roman Empire'.

4.0 out of 5 stars A short ancient history lesson and a good read! 15 August 2016

What great read! I enjoyed the quick summary of each of these historic women. Some I had heard of, Cleopatra and Boudica, but many were new to me. I wish there was another volume just like this about women from the east; Japan, India, etc.

5.0 out of 5 stars Powerful women in ancient times. 29 September 2015

Ingrid de Haas has done a wonderful job describing some of the most important women from ancient times. Some of these women, like Dido and Boudicca, were virtually unknown, until Ingrid brought them to life in her book. Ingrid skillfully describes each Queen and makes us feel as if we are right there as historical events unfolded. Her attention to detail and knowledge of events surrounding her Queens is clearly displayed. Ingrid’s writing style is clear, articulate, and concise. Reading her book is quite enjoyable and she held my interest to the point of not wanting to put the book down. Ingrid, as the biography Queen, accurately portrays the lives of the “Queens of the Ancient World.”
