A cooking-loving neighbor initially gave the Progressive International Chopper to me. It seemed someone had given it to her and it had just been sitting in her cupboard underutilized. Secretly I doubted I would use it, but thanked her and shoved it in my cupboard. I pulled it out several weeks later to dice some vegetable or other and have been in love with it since!
Obviously, I have chopped onions. But, I have also chopped: carrots, olives, celery, peppers, cauliflower, broccoli, potatoes, hard boiled eggs, pickles...even nuts! I used it nearly every day for four years. It was rather a pain to clean, had to use a scrub brush vigorously to clean the plastic grid and then typically needed to take a steak knife to get food bits out. It finally broke, so I ordered another one and was pleasantly surprised to find it came with a comb-like cleaning utensil that cleans the grid in three seconds flat! Fantastic!
We've traveled with the chopper both summer camping and winter vacations and have always been pleased. And just today my Mother, who has arthritis in her hands, asked where she could get one, since cutting vegetables is becoming too difficult.
It comes with two inserts: one that dices things up in 1/4" bits and another that dices things up in 1/2" inch bits.
Besides the blades, it is made of plastic, so you do need to use wisdom when chopping food. Making sure the item isn't larger than the grid. I broke the "C" shaped hinge portion of the top because I whacked it too hard, too many times. Use basic common sense and I believe this will last you for quite a long time.
He doesn't cook with the kids very often though. This onion chopper makes cooking with kids fun (and productive). My 4 year old twins chop onions, carrots, mushrooms.... whatever I give them with this. It makes them feel (and they actually are) helpful while cooking. After a year year of daily use, it's held up well. We've dropped it on the floor, put it though the dishwasher... attempted to chop things we probably shouldn't have and it's still in service. Yay.... that's better than 90% of kitchen tools/toys on the market, right?
It does take some effort to clean.....before you pop in in the dishwasher you must poke out all of the stuff that's stuck to the grate.... so that takes an extra 30-60s of your life. And, it's not faster than using a knife... its just a little better if you're a perfectionist about the size of the stuff you've chopped up.
I can't seem to accomplish perfect little onion bits or carrot bits with with a knife.... so..... maybe I need to invest in some good knives and cooking classes.... but until then, the onion chopper is my buddy.
The little tool that comes with it really helps when washing the machine by hand. It slips apart into three components: the basket, which is as easy to clean as any tupperware; the slap-top, which is easy to clean with the tool; and the cutting grid. The cutting grid is a bit more difficult to clean by hand, but can be done with a needle tool. I haven't attempted to wash it in a machine yet, so can't comment on that.
i subtract one star from my rating because this purchase is actually a replacement: my previous Progressive Chopper broke after a couple of years (which, hey, for the price you really can't complain). And I will say this: it is not for the timid - in order to get the best results you should really put your weight into hitting it! And make sure it is on top of something solid - no table leaves - when you do.
The chopper is pretty simple: you peel and quarter the onions, then you put each quarter on the chopping-dicing area, and push down until the device has closed all the way. The diced onions go into the bottom of the chopper to measure out into your cups or spoons and add to your preparation.
It comes with a small pick especially built to make it easier to get the small bits from the chopping area of the chopper once you are ready to clean-up..I love the addition of this chopper to my kitchen line up of tools and gadgets.

I have been using this handy tool for a while now and continue to enjoy its convenience. I failed to mention in my initial review, that once the quartered onions are placed on the grid and the top closed down on it...that I make a fist and smack the lid down using the side of my fist. The pressure from the smack works just right to push the onions through and make for great diced pieces of onion.
