In this second edition of Principles of Vibration, Benson H. Tongue takes a refreshingly informal approach to the understanding and analysis of vibration problems. His student-friendly style creates a sense of "one-on-one" communication to which students respond with enthusiasm, declaring that the text is enjoyable, informative and even "good bedtime reading." The text material can be used in a first vibrations course and in advanced undergraduate/beginning graduate courses. Some familiarity with linear algebra, elementary deformable bodies and beginning dynamics is assumed. Tongue provides a basic understanding of the principles of vibrations, presenting the core ideas and theories that define the field. Starting with classical material single-degree-of-freedom system she branches out into modern topics, emphasizing multiple-degree-of-freedom systems. Principles of Vibration, second edition is an ideal text for senior undergraduates and graduate students in mechanical, civil and aeronautical engineering departments.

Good introductory text

I used this book in Prof. Tongue's own vibrations class some years ago, and occasionally refer to it today. It reflects his unique lecture style: mathematically thorough and rigorous, yet engaging, patient (no student left behind), and often witty. The math can be difficult for engineers, but Tongue walks you through it so that it's clear. If you have to teach yourself vibrations and don't have the benefit of a teacher, this would be a good book.
This approach does have drawbacks. The expositions are lengthy. Key derivations can run for many pages, as Tongue explains all of the nuances, implications and pitfalls. This makes it difficult to use as a reference, although there is an appendix that just lists the key formulas. Systems with multiple degrees of freedom are not covered in as much detail as those with one, and even then there's a focus specifically on systems with two. If you're already passingly familiar with the subject, you're best served by a classic text such as Meirovitch.

Refreshing!

This book is written in a style that is disarmingly casual and yet at the same time thorough and precise. By how it is written, it has allowed me to deeply understand some important principles that might have eluded me if they were presented instead only as a long dry listing of theorems and proofs.

Traded in my old vibrations book for this one... great decision!

So Im taking advanced vibrations (why else buy this book, right?) and I took a chance getting rid of my old vibrations book for this one. It turned out to be a great decision. This book covers the elemetary topics quickly and moves on to advanced topics swiftly, never bogging you down too much with the lengthy equations you find when solving those damped vibrations systems (high five if you know what Im talking about!). Great reference for my class and I will surely be holding on to it afterwards. About as easy as an engineering book is going to be to read. B+
