My toddler absolutely loved the Purple Turtle from the moment we opened the box. He immediately began handing me books to read. With the length of each story, he could easily pay attention to several stories in a row. The colorful, simple pictures featuring the same cast of characters in each book is wonderful for introducing a new or more difficult concept to children. The sentence and word structure of each story also reinforced word recognition with a group of words repeating throughout the story. Some of my son's favorite stories are The Lost Bag, The Animal Parade, and Purple's New Shoes which introduce shapes, animal sounds and colors. In The Lost Bag, we love finding all of the objects with the indicated shape among the pictures as well as all of the airport vehicles. My son loves animals, so he enjoyed repeating the animal sounds in The Animal Parade. In Purple's New Shoes we enjoyed naming the colors and finding everything else pictured that was that color. The last four pages of each book are fun interactive activities for your child that relate to the topic for further reinforcement. These books will continue to grow with my child as he is able to go from being read to to reading himself and move up through the box set levels.
Since these books were published in India there are a few things that are a little off if you are an American reader. For example, there is a camel sound included in The Animal Parade and what I would call a ladybug is referred to as a ladybird in Counting Insects.
These books were received for free in return for an honest review.
This boxed set of level 1 has 12 books with a story and 4 activities in each book.
The stories are very simple with one or 2 sentences per page which is easy for a first grader to read by himself. Out of 12 books, I felt, my son, needed help for 2 to 4 books. All others were easy with simple words. The stories have good moral too. One story that we read together is about good manners. It was all about saying hello to others, thanking for helping and mentioning sorry to apologize. While one story talks about the importance of eating vegetables, another is about different sensory organs in our body. Likewise, there are stories about music, family and about the fun time the turtle spends with his friends.
I loved the activities at the end of each book. They are worth a special mention. A few activities are joining the dots of numbers to draw a picture, matching the images with shadows, matching the related objects, finding a correct way to reach destination etc., My son enjoyed completing these activities.
I recommend these boxed sets to young children to introduce them to reading and to encourage them to read by themselves. The illustrations are great and attractive. The purple turtle which is the common character in all stories is lovely.
My Rating : 4.5/ 5
Ps: I have received this book from the author through iread book tours and this is my honest opinion on the book.
The Purple Turtle Graded Readers Offer Wonderful Learning Tools for Families. While learning to read is a key skill for young children, they have a number of other skills to learn and areas of growth to encounter. The books in this series offer families a lot of opportunities for discussion on topics such as manners, healthy diets, colors, music and more. Each book asks the reader questions and offers very simple introductions to a variety of topics for family discussion.
Would I recommend the Purple Turtle Graded Readers Level 1 Boxed Set? This is a series of books for new readers. It is not necessarily a "learn to read" series of books. Readers will not find rhyming words or repetitive words or phonics development. This is a series of books for new readers who are confident and able to read the words of the Lexile level. Having said that, the series is created in such a fun, child-friendly way that readers will want to read the stories, they will want share and discuss the events of the books with family--and they will be excited to draw, color and show what they know on the books' activity pages. While the books will likely be read many, many times, once the activity pages are colored or written on; however, there is no "do-over"--so parents may want to have children answer the questions on the pages orally or create copies of them to color and complete instead. I would certainly recommend the Purple Turtle Graded Readers to parents and teachers seeking to provide a fun series of reading level appropriate books to new readers while learning something about daily life.
I received a complimentary copy of this boxed set from the publisher for use in a blog review. All opinions are my own.
