When I saw an Instagram post about Anupama Chopra's new book, I had to check it out. I watch her shows on YouTube very often and have also read her movie reviews for years. I am fascinated by her background, her Bollywood connections, and her education, that gives her a unique perspective about, and access to Bollywood.
The book does not disappoint. At this point, I have read all the parts of the movies about the movies that I love – Kabhi Kabhie, Namesake, Lunchbox, Kal Ho Na Ho, Dil Chahta Hai, etc. For most of these movies, I can articulate how I connected with them. For some of the others, Ms. Chopra’s words made me aware of why I connected with them. I did get some goosebumps when she described the scenes that I loved in those movies. To mention one of these – the showdown between Shashi Kapoor and Amitabh in Kabhi Kabhie, and Shah Rukh in Kal Ho Na Ho on the railway station. I still go back and watch those scenes and cry all over again, much to my own chagrin.
I did my mass communication in the University of Pune. Our professor, Samar Nakhate, used to make us review movies and write about them. This book took me back to those days as well.
One funny part is that when her husband, Mr. Vidhu Vinod Chopra said “‘Your love for all things Shah Rukh Khan will be your downfall as a film critic.’ I remember this interview that Anupama Chopra had done with Twinkle Khanna, she wanted to cast Shahrukh if Twinkle’s book is made into a movie. This is Akshay Kumar’s wife we are talking about. 😊
Fun read! I bought the Kindle version coz I could not wait for the paperback version to be released. Paisa vasool!
