Phantoms In The Brain: Human Nature And The Architecture Of The Mind has detailed information the intricacies of the brain. The book explores unexplored theories about the brain, by using several examples and experiments conducted by co-author, Ramachandran. Such case histories illustrate the fundamental principles of how the human brain works. The authors have discovered through research, that the brain is organising itself in response to change continuously. Inspite of losing his right arm in a motorcycle accident, a young man continues to feel a phantom arm with lively sensations of movement. Through such experiments and by using only Q-tips and dribbles of warm water, the authors discovered how the brain is reorganised after an injury. The authors have brought a combination of clinical intuition and research knowledge to this book.Phantoms In The Brain: Human Nature And The Architecture Of The Mind was written by V S Ramachandran and Sandra Blakeslee. The reissue edition is available in paperback, and was published by Fourth Estate in 2006. I read this book a year or 2 ago but continually revisit it. For someone who doesn’t have a background in Neuroscience but is absolutely enthralled by it, it was a magnificent read! It is tough in terms of the jargon and requires some effort (I.e, research easily facilitated on Google) on your part. Definitely not a layman’s cup of tea unless you’re like me and love the struggle.
Literature like this may take some building up to, and so I would recommend perhaps reading David Eagleman’s The Brain before this. That is certainly easier to comprehend.

An amazing book by VS Ramachandran sir, I am an admirer of his work and have learned a lot from his texts and talks. The book has very well described the intriguing aspects of the human brain and phantom pain, it has been written with a perfect balance to satisfy the demands of people belonging to medical and scientific community, also offering lay readers a great and lucid content to hold their interest. Being in medical field this book has supplemented my knowledge about neuroscience to which I have a lot of curiosity.

I read this book with a lot of interest and found it made good seamless reading. A hardcore book on medical diagnosis is written in a simple and reader friendly manner. Such books are needed today to help us understand our own physiology and help ourselves take care of our own health as well as that of the family.
The case studies are typical and help the reader understand difficult concepts easily. Even some of the very technical terms while describing different parts of the brain do not come in the way of comprehension. I liked reading it and warmly recommend it to non-medical people to read and understand.
I congratulate the author for giving us a good book.

I fall short of words in appreciation for this book. I am professional from an allied applied field and could understand the content much better and even than much knowledge was acquired. The last chapter 'Do Martians see red' was very deep and will require several readings to understand. Another important aspect is the ideas of simplicity of experiments and the richness of thinking gives zeal to the young reader to continue to strive in the areas of difficult research with out loosing heart. The language was thrilling and the flow of the contents connected well. The notes section in particular took greater time to read and understand.
I will request prof. Ramchandran to consider changing the cover picture as it dosen't do justice to the depth of content except for the obsession for color vision.
