Finished my Platinum last night on Hard difficulty, and can easily say that those 60+ hours did not get spent well.
I got motivated to play this game as it was the last AAA game for the previous gen and received a pretty decent reception from the audience (Metacritic). The game appeared beautiful and the backdrop of Samurai and Japan was just an icing on top.
The game looks beautiful, sure. But spend some time with it and it's just like a cute face with a low IQ. :(
Starting with difficulty, the game comes in 4 difficulty levels. Easy Medium Hard and Lethal. But except for the first few hours when the combat is challenging, the rest of the game is boring, repetitive, and very easy. The enemies have specific skill sets and do not offer much variance. Neither do they upgrade through the course of the game. Once you learn the techniques in the first few hours of the game, the rest of the hours just pass by without much difficulty. Combat is therefore not much fun as it is way too easy after some point in time. ( 3/10)
Story and Gameplay: The great Neil Druckmann once said about writing. "A good game/movie has a simple story, but complex characters". Ghost of Tsushima has a pretty simple story, but it also has a very one-dimensional protagonist. There's little to no inner conflict in the character's motivation. He had a choice between honor and no honor, which he chose within the first 3 missions...and that's it. Side characters are pretty boring as well with some repetitive, carbon copy side quests sprinkled throughout the game.
A studio like Sucker Punch should have invested in multiple endings and maybe an honor system in the game, to let the players decide if they wish to play like a Samurai or a Ninja. A huge opportunity wasted. ( 4/10)
Combat system: The first few hours of the game are challenging, and fun. We are fresh to the game with little skills, enemies look terrifying and the Boss Fights take up some time and test your skill set. But once you unlock certain techniques and upgrade yourself, the game is like cutting butter with a knife. It's extremely easy. So much so, that I was able to defeat the last 15 duels (boss fights) within 30 seconds because of some unblockable techniques I had learned. :( Not impressed. Not stimulating or challenging enough. ( 3/10)
Overall, the game is a drag and I had absolutely no fun playing this game. It could've been a masterpiece and one to remember for generations, but sadly there are more than just one factor holding it back.
Not recommending it to even casual gamers.
Good enough for beginners, but still won't recommend to them, for why lower your standards?
