Product Description

Captain Nova Whiteside is assigned to the elite Vanguard task force assembled to combat an increasingly dangerous rebel force. Her no-nonsense new commander is of an enigmatic and reclusive species that soon figures most decisively in the balance of power.

Their pursuit of a ruthless rebel leader takes them through the worlds and dangers of the Commonwealth-dominated Targon sector where the line between their personal lives and their mission quickly begins to blur.

On their quest to recover a dangerous, living weapon in rebel hands it seems that the greatest opposition comes from among their own people and Nova must choose between duty to her command and loyalty to her friends.

Although the Targon Tales are numbered chronologically, each book is a complete adventure. The volumes describe common themes, settings and characters but can be read in any order.

"More adventures with the fiery redhead as she dazzles the universe. Chris You are headed to the top of my author list with this series. I know who I want as my co-pilot when I go to space."

About the Author

I am a first generation Canadian currently and out of necessity residing on planet Earth (which, in the general and interplanetary scheme of things could REALLY use a catchier name, if you ask me. I mean, imagine heading past Proxima Centauri and someone asks you whence you came and you tell them "dirt." All theological implications aside, that just won't do.) . My first full-length work of fiction, a fantasy (which, I just realized, takes place on a planet that doesn't have a name at all), 'The Gods Of Chenoweth' is available at Amazon.

For the second novel, Only Human, I headed out far beyond Proxima Centauri and found a nifty story that soon turned into a Space Opera complete with worm holes and improbable laser guns. What fun. Laws of physics need not apply if you find a way to explain them away.
Because of reader comments, this book is now turning into a series. . When not finding ways to torture my subjects or entice them with inter-species hanky-panky, I design web sites or write about designing web sites. I enjoy long walks on the beach or, given the local beach shortage, write about beaches far beyond Proxima Centauri

5.0 out of 5 stars Gripping 22 October 2012

What impressed me the most about Only Human was the world within it that Chris Reher created. So many different people, languages, and cultures to the point that I was amazed the author was able to maintain continuity of it all! I also greatly enjoyed the strong characterization. We are allowed into almost everyone's heads to hear their thoughts, and in a seamless way that does not jar or confuse. Most importantly, I loved the main characters. I loved Nova's fiery, stubborn, determined attitude. She is strong and `gets the job done' in a way that's not bossy or annoying. I enjoyed Tychon's calmness, his wittiness and his propensity for teasing Nova.

The book is filled to the brim with action and adventure. There are incredibly descriptive fight scenes and rescue missions. Beneath this wonderful story of suspense and action and adventure and romance, Chris Reher also attempts to teach us a vital lesson about race and the awfulness of being judged / ostracized because of our heritage. This is done in an unobtrusive, non-preachy tone - often in an unconscious and/or witty remark or thought.

There are a few missed / transposed words, but the rest of the story is so well done that these tiny gaffes are inconsequential.

For me, I felt the romance developed too quickly. I'll be honest and admit that I like a `slow thaw' (long bits of Unresolved Sexual Tension) between my soon-to-be-couple, so perhaps my bias is clouding my judgment.

I didn't like the decision made at the very end of the book, and felt it was not the right one at all - judging from the background and training of the decision-maker. But in order for me to explain why I feel this way, I will be at risk of revealing spoilers. In any case, I believe the author wrote it this way probably with the intention to continue the story, so I'm not too worried.

All in all, Only Human is an amazing, gripping read. It promises to keep you hooked reading it at ungodly hours of the night (is 4am considered night???). You will become attached both to the story and to the characters, worrying for their safety, cheering for them in their successes, and eager to read on as to what they'll do next. Buy it, read it, and then come thank me for recommending a great book to read. :D

5.0 out of 5 stars Exhilarating Space Opera 28 February 2015

Dauntless heroes (and an interspecies love affair), vile villains (including a sociopath with a history addiction), exotic locales (if you don't mind your clothes stinking of ammonia), and fast-moving space battles... What's not to like?

In this third novel of the Targon Tales, Captain Nova Whiteside, a hotshot pilot who spends more time as a uniformed James Bond than flying (as some of her COs have complained in the past), is put into a new assignment which requires both sets of skills as part of the job description-- flying the fastest, best armed and stealthiest the Union Commonwealth's Air Command has, doing forward reconnaissance and special forces missions far behind rebel lines. Their primary mission will be the capture or killing of the head of the rebellion, and the saving of a six year old boy, one who holds the future of the Union in his childlike hands.

The book, like the first two in the series, is strongly character driven, and watching Nova Whiteside's growing disillusionment with some of the Union's policies-- policies she has spent a decade carrying out at gunpoint as a fighter pilot-- as well as her increasing recognition that the blind following of orders is not always in the best interests of those for whom she cares or for the Union itself-- is one of the strongest aspects of the series thus far. The growing love she shares with her senior pilot aboard the Eagle fighter is equally well written.

Since this review should contain some critique, there is one thing that grates-- the author has chosen to use all army/air force ranks for the Union fighters, and calls them 'soldiers' throughout. At least in the present day, cruisers and battleships aren't flown by soldiers, and the pilots who fly off carriers aren't in the army or even the air force. Naval ranks would have been more appropriate, perhaps with a complement of Marines as well. [Admission: I am a retired Naval Officer, and possibly biased...]

5.0 out of 5 stars Engaging, Witty, and Grand Adventure. 24 October 2012

I enjoyed reading this story immensely. The plot was sound all the way through, and Chris's world comes alive. Her characters have you invested in them. She provides depth and complexity, and humanity in each. Things aren't always what they seem in this sci-fi adventure but one never regrets the ride. There are a few minor editing issues which I'm sure will be easily updated and they don't detract from the overall experience. By the end of the book, I cried having become so engaged. The reader will find themselves running the full gamut of emotions, from grinning to crying to out right furious. A good, solid read. I can only hope there will be more of this story and the characters soon!

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it! 4 June 2013

Captain Nova Whiteside, is a human warrior who has never lived on earth; her whole life being devoted to the military. She's young but has moved quickly through the ranks and now is given a special assignment to help rid the Commonwealth Union of Planets of a particularly nasty growing group of rebel "pirates". On this assignment her commander is Tychon, a straight-laced Vanguard commander (who is an alien; not human) . Tychon seems to have very little use for humans; which makes things even more interesting since these two are the only ones on this particular space plane. Along the way they discover there is a dangerous living weapon; that greedy, power hungry people are working to unleash. The power of this weapon is beyond anything ever imagined, anywhere.

I loved this story. I am a fan of science fiction and totally devoured this story. Although a fan of sci-fi I was relieved that it wasn't one of super-gore; those I don't like. Yes, there was romance, intrigue and quite a few twists. I liked the characters, even some of what most people might consider minor ones. The details of the different planets, cultures and languages were quite in depth. The end while good; was a little disappointing only because it only "kind of" ended. But I also realize it opens the door to more of the story, somewhere down the line, if the author choose
5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating, Action-Packed, Space Adventure 20 December 2016

Captain Nova Whiteside is a space pilot in the Union Forces bases on Targon. She get promoted to space Special Forces called "Vanguard". Her trainer and supervisor is a Delphian named Tychon. The two of them make up the crew of the attack ship called the Eagle. Tychon's son is kidnapped by the rebel leader. The plot is fast moving with lots of action. The characters are very nicely rounded out and well developed. The writing is good with few errors and vivid descriptions. The book ends with option to add additional stories. I really enjoyed this book. If you like Star Wars type stories, this book is for you.
