Some books win you over with their sheer relatability and simplicity, and Once Upon an IAS Exam is such a book. You feel like you were once Vishy, juggling between running the rat race without becoming a rat. We have all been or known someone like Rithika, the pillar of support for Vishy and dealing with taking their relationship beyond friendship. We have all known or perhaps been one of the superbly crafted supporting characters. The author is a serving IAS officer, and that brings in a ring of authenticity to the tale that comes through on every page. Well worth a read and drives a very strong and relevant message that passing in life does not only depend on passing entrance exams. - Mainak Dhar, bestselling author

The story is written in a simple but lucid way. The plot is pretty straightforward. Vishy is an Engineer aspiring to become an IAS officer. The story begins with him failing the first level of the exam and hence began his journey to study to clear the UPSC exams. Whether he clears or he faces a disappointment read the book to find out.
The plot is very straightforward, although I expected a few twists n turns, though not many of those. The characterization is vivid, Vishy is very lucky to have very supportive family n friends. Rithika his girl friend is very likable character. Vishy's friends are like all other friends from college, funny, helpful n hardworking.
The pace of the story was a bit slow but even.
The things I did not like about the story is that it was pretty straightforward with not many racy moments. I was surprised that I couldn't find even a single person who was negative. The drama quotient was low.
All in all a one time read to enjoy a few hours. It could be those light reads we pick up in between heavy reads.
If you are a young college student preparing for any entrance exams then this could be a very interesting to you. Do pick this one up to relax in between your hard gruelling studies and it will surely cheer you up!!

There are those rare moments when I pop in a sweet, but the outcome of that sweet amazes me giving me flavours that I did not expect at all!
Reading this book turned out the same way!
The story starts with Vishy having his UPSC prelims failed in his first attempt.
What do we expect when an enthusiastic aspirant fails the ultimate examination of his/her life?
Here comes the difference though.
He cribs, but the difference is in his attitude about moving on to the next thing to do in order to move closer to his dreams.
But is it that easy?
Is it his fault he has to fall in love with his best friend Rithika?
*Dang! Sorry to burst your bubble!
➿➰➰➰➰This is not the love story you are thinking of➿➰➰➰➰
👍Not the typical boy meets girl romance story
It gives 'the effortless simple romance that matters more' kind of vibe till the end.
👍When a person fails, what matters is the right attitude of the person.
The different characters have been portrayed perfectly!
The loner, the popular, the talented, the hardworking, the crowd pleasers, the 'aspirants' who have no idea why they are there, the focussed ones, the 'ruined by love' ones : a pretty wholesome character plot indeed!
What's more applaudable is the effortless humour! More than a few times during the few hours of reading, I burst out laughing with such easy yet relatable funny lines exchanged between the characters👌
The parents are really ideal yet believable.
Everything in the book is so damn relatable. If you are one of those entrance examination aspirants, you will be able to relate till the end.
😍What impressed me the most is how dedicated Vishy was to his goals yet so level headed and resourceful whenever required. Rithika is the ideal girlfriend that any guy would wish for.
What she does for Vishy is really remarkable👍
👌Friendship, loyalty, reality well pointed out 👍It gives the real scenario behind the coaching institutes and what goes in the lives of the IAS aspirants.
Such a good read it was!
Amidst the tense, competitive atmosphere of the country’s toughest examination, there develops a sweet love story. Things turn even more interesting when Vishy, in his determination to conquer ‘Mount IAS’, enters the world of coaching centres. The author here, takes a dig at the growing business of these coaching centres which sell dreams to millions of aspirants. It is in one of these coaching centres that Vishy finds new friends who are on the same boat as him and they struggle together through this stormy trail.
Success doesn’t come easy, especially in the Civil Service Examinations. However, anything is possible through persistence and hard work. Hence, Vishy’s dream of becoming a bureaucrat also comes true one day.
This book portray’s the daily struggles of a regular aspirant and the emotional turmoil he goes through during the preparation. The novel, coming from a person who himself is a bureaucrat, makes it all the more special. Aspirants of the UPSC exam would find this book relatable. For others, it would be a sweet, light-hearted read.
