About the Author
Ernest Hemingway did more to influence the style of English prose than any other writer of his time. Publication of The Sun Also Rises and A Farewell to Arms immediately established him as one of the greatest literary lights of the 20th century. His classic novella The Old Man and the Sea won the Pulitzer Prize in 1953. Hemingway was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1954. He died in 1961.
Donald Sutherland's gentle and thoughtful reading of the 1952 classic is spot-on perfect. The tale concerns an old fisherman in a Cuban village who, after an especially bad fishing season, sets out in his skiff, determined to bring in a big fish. By noon, the old man hooks a great marlin, but the powerful fish drags the skiff out to sea for two days. Challenged by starvation, injury, a school of sharks, and this great, noble fish, the old man struggles to survive. Without even trying to put on an accent, Sutherland catches the cadence and intonation of Cuba as well as the weary determination of the old man. Longing, desperation, and hope flow from Sutherland's velvet lips like an ocean current. S.E.S. its a good edition, one could finish in just one sitting
and its absolutely worth reading.
"“But man is not made for defeat," he said. "A man can be destroyed but not defeated.” "
this is one of my favorite quote from this book
which could translate to "don't give up"
bad times come , but don't be defeated by them.
like the protagonist Santiago, who despite having a dry period of fishing at his old age, fight for the biggest catch of his life.
LOVED IT , worth the money
Update 24 Oct 2016 - Great book. Very gripping story, it only hits you when you finish the last 2 pages.
At first look, the story appears to be a simple tale of an old fisherman but, there's much more to the story. It's a tale of bravery and heroism, a man's struggle against his own doubts and how he eventually succeeds, then fails, and then wins again. This old man tells a fundamental human truth that in this world, from our first breath to our last wish, through victories and failures the only thing that sustains us, ultimately, is HOPE. Never give up Hope. Walk on with hope in your heart, and you'll never walk alone. 😊
Hemingway’s descriptions of the sea and the creatures of the water are beautiful.
Juss read it with an old man's perspective and I bet you won't be disappointed.
