The book comes with a DVD that has a practice exam and a discount code to buy the Premium eBook version that includes a much larger exam library. I do think the practice exam was very helpful in making sure I knew the content that I just learned about and also to help me get my time in down in how long it took for me to answer the questions to make sure I could complete the exam before the 90 minutes counted down.
If I had to pick only one book to use for preparing for this exam it would be this book.
There were items in the exam that this book didn't even give attention to - and some areas where it went into excruciating detail. Given you have to have experience AND complete a training course, some of the detailed screenshot-by-screenshot explanations for simple tasks were probably overkill.
The biggest dis-service Bill Ferguson did to this book (and he acknowledges it time and time again in the text of the book) was following VMware's exam blueprint order exactly. There were items that were talked about in brief, but only glossed over saying "lets talk about this later". Example from Chapter 5: Establishing and Maintaining Service Levels:
"Considering that I have yet to discuss vMotion, it might seem odd to be discussing Enhanced vMotion Compatibility (EVC) at this point, but remember that I am following the blueprint 'to the letter.' "
In short, a good book that achieves its goals, but could be alot better structured giving greater returns to the reader.
Another important point: Don't believe that a working knowledge of Vsphere is all you need to pass. There are alot of topics you may not give a second thought to, or you may have minimal exposure to, which will be a critical topic on the test. This book covers it all.
I should also mention there is a 5.5 vcp test which covers more questions and the changes/additions from 5.0. If you go for the 5.5 test this book will still cover the bulk of the material, but you should supplement with the 'what's new' pdf from vmware and use the 5.5 exam blueprint as a guide. Good luck, this test is a tough one and you need to prep!
I recommend picking up this book, getting through it and doing all the practice and questions, BUT also pick up a book that highlights 'Trouble shooting' as those were the questions giving me the most difficulty because my day-to-day administration of a VSphere VCenter is fortunately trouble free.
Fortunately, I have a game plan for the next time I have to re-certify.
