Whether it is in worship, meditation or yoga, 'OM' is perhaps the most chanted of all divine sounds. But the fact that this divine sound has so many meanings is something that most of us are unaware of. The book explains 109 such meanings of OM in a systematic and structured way with proper citations from Vedas, Upanishads, Purans, Smritis etc. while being very crisp and engaging; which also makes the book endearing to readers who are not familiar with the aforementioned sources. The best part about the book is that it is not a work of imaginative interpretation but is a well-researched work backed with citations at every point. 'The OM Mala' certainly makes a very interesting and enriching read.

‘The OM Mala’ by Nityananda Misra is a simple yet powerful book describing the magic of word OM. The entire book is based on the concept of the mala that is used to chant the name of God in Hindu culture. It consists of 108 chanting beads and one Sumeru(head) bead.

The book is divided into 109 sections in accordance with the number of beads in a mala. Each section tells about the different meanings of the word OM. Along with the meanings, a brief explanation has also been given regarding the derivation of the particular meaning. Also, the etymology and the excerpts from Hindu scriptures are included in the book.

The title is perfect as it encapsulates the theme of the book. The author has done a lot of research work in coming up with this book yet he finds it incomplete in explaining the varied aspects of the OM. The word has been chanted by saints of all times and different religions and cultures. To each one of them, the word has a distinctly special meaning. The book is written lucidly that amazingly puts forth the multi-dimensions of OM. By the end of the book, you’ll find yourself equipped with unique knowledge about a simple monosyllable. This is the specialty of this book.

Anyone who has a penchant for sounds and words and the one who is intrigued by the mystic entities must read this book to catch hold of enormous magical stuff!

I have read all the books authored by Mr. Nityananda Misra. He dives deep into providing the correct meaning of words/verses. His scholarly work is what India needs in today's times. Hope to see a similar work on Lord Ram's name in near future. Kudos! Keep up the good work.

For most of us, we know OM as simply a centering sound before or after meditation and that’s about it. This wonderful book shows that OM is much more. This is an indispensable reference book.

OM can be a mystery for anyone reading the Upanishads or Brahmanas on their own. The Chandogya Upanishad, for example, indicates that OM can be Ugdita, Pravana, or Omkara. Well, which one is it? Then it says that Ugdita is Pravana. Then the Gita says it is Akshana. Its all very confusing.

    Author Misra clarifies the confusion.

Misra has 109 different meanings to OM. Ugdita, Pravana, Akshara, or Omkara, or any of the other names of OM have their own individual meanings. Author Misra gives a definition to each word for OM, a brief discussion of the definition, and relevant sound bytes from the Upanishad, Brahmana or other scripture. There is a specific meaning to the subtitle. The mala is a meditation rope with 109 beads.

It will either clear all past confusion or open a entire new look at a well-known word. You will find yourself underlining. the book as you read through.

This book can be used as a reference book, because the full meaning of OM is revealed. It can also be used for study as an aid to meditation. For either use, it comes highly recommended.
