Reviewed in India 🇮🇳 on 23 May 2016
If you gonna say, I don't get good pictures with this DSLR, then you gotta kidding me. Thousands of reviews are written about this product & most of them indicates this product in a positive way. There are lots of comparisons with lots of cameras where it came first or even sometimes it's not the best for someone who rated the other camera 1st. So there are some problems which can be minimized anyway. So I'm going to say bad things about this beast then I will go for the good ones.
    BAD ONES-
    1.Noise- Three types
    i) Audio noise made by any sort of lens auto focus system you connect to this camera, like canon's it can't make a truely silent video if you set the camera in auto focus. It can be minimised by using manual focus.
ii) While doing a video, if you use the internal mic of the camera you will hear a lots of noise, when you review it at your home. You can use a good quality external mic while doing a video and minimise the audio noise.
iii) Noise appears when capturing a long exposure shot which is longer then 10 sec or above, at night. Even when you tune your camera at lowest ISO you will notice a bit noisy image if you zoom it. If you want to minimise it then you can turn on the LONG EXPOSURE NR which is present in the camera's menu(SHOOTING MENU). But remember turning on this LONG EXPOSURE NR, your long exposure shot time will get doubled(if you take a shot for 25 sec then camera will take 25 more secs to process the image i.e total 50 sec). Another way of minimising the noise is using a computer software like lightroom or photoshop if you don't want to waste your time for jumping one shot to another.

    2. Live view autofocusing is slow because of using contrast detection technique when you are in live view mode. The solution is try to take most of your shots using the viewfinder. The other solution is to use the manual focus.

    3. Manual focus is a little pain using the viewfinder for the first atleast 100 shots. The good solution is practice practice and more practice. The other solution is to use your live view while manually focusing and use your +magnify button to see if it's in perfect focus or not.

    4. The onboard FLASH. It's not great and mostly it will give you a very bad shadow and reflection when you capture people wearing glass. The solution is to use 3200 ISO and do post production for removing noise. The other solution is to buy a inexpensive manual flash which is good actually if you want to learn controlling your shots really well. The ONBOARD FLASH consumes a lot of battery also, so try avoiding it as much as possible.

    5. There is a intervalometer for taking photos continuously and then make a timelapse using pc softwares. There are cameras which can produce a time lapse video after taking the shots and combine them in the camera and give us a ready made video. But here this camera, you can use the intervalometer for taking the shots for a continous period of time, but it can't give you a direct video out of it. But if you see it in a positive way, you have all the raw image files, then make the adjustments as you want and then make the timelapse in a more artistic way and this is good also because if the shots are not properly exposed then you can make the exposure and other staff like saturation, highlights, shadows as you like and give the final video a better look.
I made a timelapse video using this camera, you can check it out here-[...]

    6. No autofocus motor, you have to use the manual focus if there is no autofocus motor in the lens inside.

Here are the BAD ones for me, which I think I can get over. If you can too, then there is no way stopping you from buying this camera.

    The Good Ones-

    1. Image Quality is awesome. The 24MP is really worthy while cropping and if you print large images then this won't let you down.

    2. Easy to use. This is very important because if you don't understand your camera, then the camera can't understand your shot (if you have your own perspective for your frame).

    3. Light weight. This is one of the major reasons I choose it over D7000. If you use it using hands, then using it over several hours don't feel a bit of pain.

    4. WiFi- Admit it or not it's a great feature. You can take beautiful group photos & if you want to see yourself in your group photos after 10 years of graduation, this wifi feature helps & moreover you can lock your shutter for more than 30 min while using the bulb mode (you don't need a smartphone always to lock your shutter longer then 30 min or using the bulb mode, there is a mode called time mode after the bulb mode where you click the shutter button once it will lock the mirror up & then as long as you don't click the shutter button again it will remain open until the battery dies).

    5. Battery gives atleast 1500 shots if you don't review your images. If you review the image everytime you clicked then the no of shots will be 450-500. If you use onboard camera flash for every shot the no of shots will reduce to 350-400.

    6. Battery Charges very fast. Hardly take 1 hour if you charge the battery, when battery showing is one bar only. If the battery dies completely then it take 1.5 hours to charge it completely. Charging it for 15-20 min will give your atleast 100-150 shots (hidden quick charge you know).

    7. Pair it with tamron 70-300 VR, the photos will shock you absolutely. Try buying the tamron lens I mentioned.

    8. Built In Intervalometer can give you the joy of taking timelapses. You will find the camera's true potential then.

    9. Videos at ISO 6400 looks less noisy, you can use upto that level of ISO while doing your video at low light.

    10. The quality of the display is marvelous. If you see the displays of D3300 or D3200 you will thank yourself for buying this right camera.

    11. The autofocus is damn fast while using the viewfinder paired with it's 18-55/ 55-200/ 18-140mm nikon lenses at night. Just try to focus on a light and it will bring a smile on your face.

    12. This list is never ending because the more you use , the more you discover the amazing facts about this camera.

P.S- There is also a gps, which I don't use actually, but if you want to use this then try to use it under a clear sky. It will get tracked easily, it consumes a lot battery too. So take a single picture using GPS, then turn it off & then synchronize the location data to rest of the pictures in lightroom.

[...] Thank you so much for reading my review. Will update the review if I find any difficulties/new fact about this camera (and if you click the menu+i button together, the whole camera settings will get a full reset) and stay tuned.

    Verdict- Just go for it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Near perfect 📷 for enthusiast beginners
Reviewed in India 🇮🇳 on 27 October 2020
I am reviewing after two years of usage.

Nikon is well established name in photography and has been making cameras since beginning of 20th century. This expertise is evident in their cameras. It’s better than Canon and trade off over cheaper lens for canon to better colour and crispness seems worthwhile for me.

While there are many DSLR cameras available over price range, I find this one will suit the enthusiastic beginner best.

    Pros:
    1. The focus points at 39 is optimal for photography.

    2. Autofocus (AF) is good and fast enough for quality pictures.

    3. LCD screen is ok to review your work, however to get best out of battery I recommend using viewfinder for focussing (DSLR main advantage is viewfinder sees same as lens).

    4. Metering is ok and auto white balance works most of times (unless you want special exposure).

    5. Interface is standard and can be mastered in few days.

    6. Backward compatibility of Nikon ensures that lenses from 1950s can also be used on this body !

    7. Build quality is solid eventhough it is not weather sealed. (Please don't take it in water or in rain).

    Cons:
    1. No Programmble settings available to set your preferred mode. It comes with beginners preset for exposure triangle like potrait, landscape, action etc. Which is good for beginners but once you get hang of it you want more.

    2. Lacks snapbridge app for controlling the camera and transferring images using smartphone (present in D5600).

    3. Stock 18-55 mm is crap and sadly you cannot buy without it. 70-300 mm is good for distance photography. With crop sensor it becomes 1.6x which translates to 105-450 mm.

    4. I have been trying astrophotography and night shoots but sadly this camera is too cheap and I probably need full sensor camera D800s to achieve that.

They say that in photography first 10000 images you take are crap, this camera is perfect tool to take those 10,000 shots and improve.

    Camera recommendation
    1. Buy 64 GB SD card (highest capacity compatible with camera)
    2. If interested in landscape and potrait you can buy capable Sigma 17-50 mm f/2.8 lens, it gives beautiful images and autofocus is quite fast. (Except wildlife images all attached image are from sigma lens)
    3. Always shoot in RAW as it allows far more edit option in Lightroom without harming the original.
