I started wearing the Nike Free shoes after reading Born To Run, about the benefits of barefoot (or barefoot-like) running. The book makes a strong case for shoes with less cushioning, especially at the heal, for a more natural footfall & heal strike. I don't run in them (yet), but I don't run much (yet). But after a bad bout of plantar fasciitis I tried them, and the pain went away very quickly—and it hasn't returned since. I now swear by these shoes.
I have super flat feet, but I use Superfeet inserts in these and can walk all day in them.
I haven't purchased this shoe since the first year it came out so I'm not sure when they changed the design.
