The New York Times bestseller, is now completely revised and updated. In this edition, internationally recognized executive coach Lois P. Frankel reveals a distinctive set of behaviors--over 130 in all--that women learn in girlhood that ultimately sabotage them as adults.
She teaches you how to eliminate these unconscious mistakes that could be holding you back and offers invaluable coaching tips that can easily be incorporated into your social and business skills. Stop making "nice girl" errors that can become career pitfalls, such as:
- Mistake #13: Avoiding office politics. If you don't play the game, you can't possibly win.
- Mistake #21: Multi-tasking. Just because you can do something, doesn't mean you should do it.
- Mistake #54: Failure to negotiate. Don't equate negotiation with confrontation.
- Mistake #70: Inappropriate use of social media. Once it's out there,it's hard to put the toothpaste back in the tube.
- Mistake #82: Asking permission. Children, not adults, ask for approval. Be direct, be confident.

On the flip side, is it possible they are unconsciously sabotaging those same careers?
Lois P. Frankel argues how, from early childhood, girls are taught that their well being and ultimate success are contingent upon acting in certain stereotypical ways. It is not that women consciously act in self-sabotaging ways. They simply act in ways consistent to their learning experiences.
She explains that the goal is not to act like a poor imitation of a man; rather to act as an adult woman and not the little girl you were taught to be in childhood. It is all about perception, and to change that you need to work on your credibility factor.
The 7-38-55 rule of Personal Communication states that 7% of your credibility comes from the content of your messages, 38% from how you sound (tone of voice, volume etc.) and 55% from how you look (dress, body language, non-verbal messages). The author lists 133 unconscious behavioural mistakes women make which may keep them from rising to the very top of their careers. She groups these into categories such as how you think, act, sound, and play the game.
As a self help book, this is quite interactive. You answer a survey at the beginning which identifies key problem areas applicable to you. You then action on those specific behavioural traits which are explained with real-life examples and supplemented with simple coaching tips to help you overcome them.
During the course of my reading I realised how, by making the littlest changes in behaviour, it is possible to change perception.
IMHO this should be mandatory reading for women because not only does it give you an edge in your careers, but also in life.
I love the way the chapters are broken down

Some of the points are a variation on a theme but the book is very comprehensive and good at helping you re-evaluate how you work. The one's I found most useful were 'unwilligness to capitalize on relationships', 'helping', 'taking full responsibility' and 'letting people waste your time'.
The structure of the book also helps keep it interesting through. Most books have one idea they repeat over and over again. The fact that the book only really devotes 2-4 pages to each point keeps it focused and interesting.
