CONs (very small cons)
I will say the tick tock is a bit loud and am contemplating a simple way to stop the pendulum overnight. Resetting the time is very simple- just push the hands (gently) to the correct time. Also 6am might be a bit early for cuckoos for some people. The instructions tell you which two batteries to take out to stop the cuckoo, but an on/off switch would have been nicer. Maybe the next clock up has that. Lastly the sound quality is a bit garbled and full of background sounds, but the cuckoo sound is in there. All of these are minor aesthetic issues given the price, and 2 of the 3 have pretty easy ad hoc solutions, so only one star knocked off grand total. Probably not something you want in your bedroom though. Living room or dining room might be the best place.
UPDATE on CONs: Just found and tested the volume knob (duh) so can silence the cuckoo and not worry about the cuckoo waking me an hour before my alarm clock wakes me. :) The ticktock seems to be quiet now though I don't think that was the volume button. The pendulum might have been a little crooked or something before. It's swinging full right now, but not noisy at all since I took the clock down and put it back up. Still the sound quality could be much better in this digital age without raising the price (think singing birthday cards are more crisp sounding), so can't quite push it to the five stars. Volume knob was worth returning to this review. :)
It's made for being stuck up on a wall, not playing soccer with, so the material is plenty sufficient to deliver a nice looking working cuckoo clock in this price range. If it survives the shipping trip to your home, you should be good to go. I see other reviewers with nonfunctional cuckoo birds and suggest they give it one exchange before giving up on it. Ours is working fine out of the box- the doors open and the cuckoo bird flaps its wings, and the cuckoos go on for some seconds. If a delivery guy dropped it or kicked the box up your sidewalk, the clock is probably doomed. It's very simple to set, simple to silence, simple to operate, good value for the price, nice and fun- 3 dimensional object on the wall that looks nice and makes fun noise every hour makes the room a friendlier place. Kid is delighted with it, so all in all it's a solid four stars.
The bigger problem I had is the sound of the cuckoo when it "chimes." It is very mechanical, and sounds almost like a cassette tape recording. We turned the volume down, and it tone does sound better when the clock is hanging on the wall. But, it's far from a "real" cuckoo sound.
Some complaints about the setting of the hours - it is a challenge, but it is doable.
It's a nice, simple, inexpensive show piece... but if your recipient would appreciate the "real thing," then I would consider something else.
