Born 1936 on the Caribbean Island of St. Lucia, this tells of Willie’s early years in Guyana, before becoming a seaman and jumping ship in Cardiff, eventually becoming the singer in one of the top bands at that time, “Willie Wilson and the Down Beats.”
Willie and his band made a big name for themselves in Germany. In fact in Hamburg, they played the same circuit as “The Beatles” - “Gerry and the Pacemakers” and many other famous entertainers. Willie also counted Radio Presenters and movie stars among his friends.
You will then read about how Willie then went from being a singer in a band, to being the oldest DJ in the crazy resort of Magalluf, on the Spanish “Fantasy Island” of Mallorca.
If you have ever wondered what it was really like to be in a top band in the “Swinging Sixties,” surrounded by “Sex and Drugs and Rock & Roll” with adoring women shouting your name and baying for your body, then this is the book for you.
Introducing Willie Wilson
I first met Willie when he stepped onto the terrace of my bar in Magalluf, Mallorca back in 1994. He was carrying a box of records in his left hand, and maracas in his right. I was sitting on the terrace of my Bar, “Cagney’s” and he joined me to enjoy the sunshine and a cool drink.
He’d come to look for an apartment, and had an appointment to view one in Edificio Trianon 1, which was located two doors up the hill from the bar.
I next met Willie two days later. As he went to walk past, he noticed me sitting in the same terrace seat and stopped to say hello. He looked worried, and when I asked for the cause of his trepidation, he told me the reason was that he’d either lost his record collection, or they’d been stolen.
“They’re inside the bar,” I told him, “I kept them safe for you.” I watched that now famous Willie Wilson smile spread across his face. He’d left his records and maracas on my terrace, when he’d left for his appointment. I thought he’d done this on purpose and would return for them, but when he was delayed, I put them behind the bar for safe keeping.
“Kevin, you have saved my life,” he laughed. This was the start of a friendship that has now survived many years. This makes his story even more amazing, because he never told me or anyone about this.
In the sixties, Willie’s band played with “The Beatles” in Hamburg, was friends with Gerry Marsden, from “Gerry and the Pacemakers,” played live on Dutch TV supporting “Little Peggy March” singing “I Will Follow,” and has many more amazing stories you will read about in the following pages.
As I say, I was amazed because he never mentioned any of this, as he is such a humble man.
I only knew him as “Willie the DJ and Entertainer,” who until a couple of years ago, at the age of seventy-six was the oldest working DJ in Mallorca, if not Spain.
Although not fully retired, Willie spends his days now mostly walking along Magalluf’s promenade, relaxing in the Spanish sunshine and drinking coffee o the terrace of this bar or that.
If you are ever holidaying in the resort and you see Willie, please stop by to say “Hello,” he will always make time for you. Just look for the little black man wearing the baseball cap, with the smile on his face which can light up the world. This will be my friend -
