Update. Received the replacement and I assumed it would be the newer one as it is very difficult to determine ...today after almost a year, I did some advanced checks and realized that it is still the older version... Extremely disappointed

There’s already negative reviews about this box from people that haven’t even bought it complaining about Matricom’s support. I have used their support numerous times and have always been happy with their help. Some people are saying they don’t upgrade their firmware, which is also a fat lie. The original Q that I bought had two firmware updates that happened automatically. You can just ignore these people, I don’t even know where they come from or what their motive is by spreading these rumors. Probably a competitor or something, but whatever their reasons are, it’s all nonsense. I know first hand.
Upgraded my Q to the Q2 and couldn’t be happier. This is a darn good box. I especially like the new UI. When you press the “Home” button, it brings up a quick launch bar on the bottom of the screen no matter what app you’re in. And it doesn’t even interrupt the app running. Very slick concept!
A couple of things worth mentioning to help speed up setting up yours. Here’s a couple of must have apps for this box that you’ll want to install, and how to install them:
This box supports the amazon app store and amazon prime video, and it works flawlessly just as they say. Now you have to install the app store to get Amazon video to work, but I didn’t know how to do this so I called their support and the gentleman walked me through it. I’ll post the steps here for anybody else that wants to do this because its not explained anywhere else and the only way you would ever know is if you called support yourself.
First, go to this website from the browser on your box:
You’ll see an orange button that says “Download Appstore”. Click that. It’ll seem like nothing is happening but its downloading the App Store to the box. Click “Home” button on remote to bring up the UI, scroll down until you get to the “All Apps” bar. Click on the “AppInstaller” app, then click “Local” which you’ll see the Amazon Appstore. Click that then it will prompt you to install the App Store. Accept the prompt, then open the App Store when done. Login to Prime with your amazon login information and now you have access to tons of free apps, including Amazon Video. Once you install the Amazon video app, you’ll have access to all of your Prime video content! and it plays these back smoothly and perfectly. I no longer use my Fire TV box because this completely replaces the need for it. Note that you will need a mouse to get the best experience out of this app.
The box came with Kodi but its not the latest version. To get the latest version, open Browser on the box then go to the kodi.tv website, click “Downloads” from the top bar, then scroll down to Android APK install: ARM. Click the ARM button. This will download the latest Kodi, which you can install the AppInstaller like you did Amazon Appstore. If you need to learn about Kodi I recommend going to Youtube and searching “How to setup fusion on Kodi”. This will step by step show you how to get tons of free TV and movies.
This is by far my favorite app for the G-Box. Open the browser and search Google for “Popcorn Time Android”. Click the website that is “popcorn-time.to”. This website may change later. Click “Install beta x.x” button. Again this downloads in the background and you’ll need AppInstaller to install this app. Just like Amazon Prime app, you’ll want to use your mouse when navigating this app. There’s every movie and TV series I can imagine on this app alone and it works perfect on this box. So enjoy!
This is definitely the most useful box I have ever used and I have every streaming box known to man. Fire TV, Roku, Apple TV, Nexus box and every G-Box up until now. Although this isn’t a plug and play box like some others, the features you’ll find here blows away anything you’ll see with any other box. Not to mention this box is really quick and responsive.
I’d like to point out that if you already own the original Q, you may not need to upgrade to the Q2 unless you just want a faster box (it’s a bit faster than the Q from my experience), because Matricom announced they are releasing a firmware update for the original Q that gives it most of the features that the Q2 has. You can read about this on their website [...]
Overall this is the best $100 I’ve ever invested on my living room.
This is not my first Android box but it is the first to deliver a seamless set up, good browser speeds and being optimized for Kodi. I really like the App changer feature which allows me to search apps without shutting down the current one running. Load speed is fast due to larger RAM. Like most of these devices you really should buy a wireless little keyboard, it will simplify your life endlessly.
The customized user interface is very nice and extremely easy to navigate and use. Very intuitive.
Now for the goods! Kodi runs brilliantly on this system. I have an elaborate, highly customized skin and GUI settings based on Phenomenal in Kodi 16. This runs my skin no problems at all. I use my box heavily and so far only 2 crashes where I was asking a lot from the processor so to be fair it may have been my fault both times.Maybe its just me but SALTS is running faster with more hits from more scrappers that I use to have disabled! Scrobbling works flawlessly too, unlike my previous boxes where it was unreliable. Live TV streaming flawless and loads fast. The CEC command wqorks perfectly where my previous "lesser" units never would.
I would definitely recommend this box to anyone who doesn't want to shell out the $300 for the Nvidia which for all indications and reviews read MAY be better but I can not ascertain that having never used one.
In a nut shell I would have given 5 stars if remote included was'nt the same basic one that comes with all these types of boxes and there was more HDMI plugs. 2 is just enough for a flash drive and the remote control upgrade interface/charger,
The home screen use to allow you to see all your favorite apps. Now it has a weather app as the home screen and you are limited to adding only 4 apps on a tool bar. You cannot change this setting. To see your apps, you have to click on another icon.
The home button is now useless. The home button on the remote allowed you to toggle between apps. Now you have to fully end an app before starting a new app.
The power button is also now useless. I can understand no longer needing the power button because it can go into stand by mode. However, the box has a huge G on top and it lights up as a bright blue. If you have this in your bedroom like i do and are a light sleeper, the light is very bright and makes it difficult to sleep with. The power button use to let you turn off the box. Now you have to get up and unplug the box.
Im not sure why the company decided to roll out this firmware without testing, but the box has taken a serious step backwards. I have both the gbox and the amazon fire tv, they are very similar and i use to recommmend the gbox over it. But with the drastic changes, I cannot recommend this product until they figure out the firmware. You are better off with the amazon fire tv.
