First, the book is very short. This may explain the minimal development of characters. If I hadn't already read the 17th Green book, I wouldn't have understood or appreciated the main character, Travis McKinley, at all. Jerzy, the teenage golfer mentored by Travis, is so poorly described as to be almost ghostlike. The book is overpriced for a "novelette".
In addition I found golfing material in the book to be unrealistic. The suspension of disbelief necessary in reading this book is enormous. Professional golfers would never mistake a lofted 9 iron for the much flatter 6 iron. Augusta could never be entered by simply wading Rae's creek, and a novice golfer simply couldn't attain the claimed proficiency in a couple of weeks (or years!).
I suspect that Patterson's coauthor DeJonge was given primary responsibility for this book and that the galleys were rushed to the publisher with little if any polishing by the master himself. The quality of this work is simply not up to the high standard of story telling in Patterson's other fine works.
Good writing and easy reading, but it should have been listed under the "For Readers Of All Ages." I've tried one each of the Maximum Ride, Daniel X, Confessions, and Witch & Wizard series and they didn't impress me.
When I was ten years old, I might have enjoyed all of these, but I'm really annoyed they didn't have a warning on the cover: "Not recommend for old guys!" I did have one good thought; thankfully it was only 200 pages!
