The Metal Gear franchise has made a name for itself as being one of the most played (and most detailed) Stealth/Action games in history. However, Metal Gear Rising is for guys like me who drooled at the cutscenes where Raiden performed these elaborate (almost Rajnikanth level) stunts and left me wondering 'Man I wish I could have a game with just him as the hero'.
The fighting mechanics of the game are responsive and the new "Free Blade Cutting" system works well within the combat. Be warned, however, that not all the mechanics are the same as other Hack n Slash games. For example, there is no block, you have to time an attack of your own in order to parry and stun your opponent. Small little tweaks like these keep the gameplay fun and doesn't make you feel like you can simply button-mash your way to victory. An excellent buy and highly recommended for fellow slasher enthusiasts.
If you have interest in MGS series, you should buy it to relate with complete story of MGS series and to maintain your MGS collection in chronological order !
Keeping an eye at the price tag, it's a "Must Buy' ! ;-)
Armstrong is one hell of a a-hole, don't die easily.
Must have for MGS fans.

Story
Metal Gear Rising story is not as complex as previous metal gear games, and while it mentions a lot of details from previous games, it can stand on its own for anyone that did not play MGS titles. The story is simple and while it can at times seem rushed, the written is as good as any MGS title, with some dark political tune at times, and switching to humor moments at any time with brilliant voice acting. It always managed to excite me for the next big over the top moment and encounter (unlike the insulting terrible writing of DmC that was neither funny, nor clever). Watch the codec calls, this have a lot of information that add to the storyline and if you don't participate in them a lot of info will be lost. 8/10
Gameplay
Rising shines with its speed control, great parry system, innovative blade mode, and great AI. Unlike DmC where enemies are just punching bags with colors at times to limit you, Rising enemies attack you mercilessly, block your attacks, stay away from your range, and deploy different strategies to keep you on your tows. Unfortunaly you can tell that Platinum had to rush some aspects of the game due to its long production before their arrival, some aspects seemed rushed and not so well worked. The stealth sections are just a little bonus with few options that could have been much more, the weapon swapping can't be done on the fly limiting your combo options, and the camera does become a nuisance at times. The zandatsu mechanic also needs some work as it shouldn't weal you completely, that can limit the challenge that was spot on without it.
A special reference to the boss fights, amazing. their challenging hard, multi phased, a breath of fresh air after the terrible boss fights of DmC 8/10
Design
The game looks like, metal gear, feels like metal, even being a completely different genera. From the look of the codecs, the looks of the enemies, the sounds, the voices, the colors. Rising is a new series that does deserve to be side by side with the Solid ones and I hope with MGS ground zeroes and the suposed MGS 5 (Phantom Pain) on the Kojima finds some time to give Platinum a chance to do MGR 2 at their side. 9/10
SOund
Rising voice acting is top noch as you could expect from a MG game. All the sound effects are well done, but the thing that shines is the metal soundtrack, its amazing with dynamic notes that hit at the right time in fights and in boss fights get you pumped. They don't just match with the action but in their final phase the lyrics kick in and they are not just random noise but actually tell a story of what is going on in the screen or something about the character your fighting. Unlike DmC soundtrack that was clearly chosen by personal taste of the developer with no coordination with story or feel, MGR soundtrack had a deep thought of immersion to the player on the story 10/10
Longevity
My final clocked time was 6h25 on the game screen. this doesn't count cutscenes or replays. Even doe it felt shorter than lets say Bayonetta. it is not as short as some reviewers say. DmC clocked in less than 7 hours with cutscenes included and don't forget DmC is a cutscene heavy game. so MGR ends up being slightly longer than DmC, not to mention in MGR you will die, in DmC the hardest thing is actually dying. The game also as replay value with higher difficulties that really matter, and a lot of things to unlock. 7/10
Verdict
MGR is a great game that could use some refinements in some mechanics that are stuck between being MGS and being a hack and slash game, but the potential is huge. And i am dropping this review to go play hard mode and keep my addiction going. If you love hack and slash and/or are a metal gear fan this is a must buy
8/10
Game play 9/10: This is probably the main category which makes this game so enjoyable, the fact you can cut anything in your path. The movement are very fluid and very easy to get used to on the get go, the only problem is the blocking feature however if you are having trouble then play on easy with assist and blocking will not be an Issue. It is extremely satisfying to slice your opponent into many small pieces after a great parry or simply cut them right through the middle to snatch away their life source to regain them for yourself. You also have an AR Mode which is like an X-ray vision to locate key locations/enemies/treasure which gives a slight stealth based game play, however there is hardly any sneaking in the game.
Story 4/10: Sadly this does not at all live up to the Metal Gear franchise, story is quite bland, boring and not at all engaging. You stop caring for the characters and you just want the movie to end so you can continue slicing the enemies up; You meet a few familiar faces which is refreshing and some new which don't really last that long or give you enough background to really care. I completed the game on hard difficulty in "4 HOURS!" the game is extremely short; they should have made the game at least 10 hours long. Fair enough compared to other MG games the cut scenes do not last that long and there is more game play involved. I really enjoyed the final show done, but some chapters you can complete within 3-5 minutes and there are only 7 chapters.
Graphics 8/10: Graphics are quite amazing the environments in some location are not so detailed, however you cannot expect too much when everything you can see can be sliced anyway you wish. The frame rate does not lag or give any glitch issues as far as I have notice.
Extra Modes 7/10: The Return of VR Missions, this really tests your skills on the game and I guess this is what gives the game a replay ability after completing the story, sadly not all VR Missions are unlocked you have to find them hidden in a laptop within the story. You have an upgraded mode within story where you can change your appearance, make your sword more powerful and change weapons after you defeat few bosses.
Overall 7/10: In conclusion if you're after a stealth MGS style game, you won't find it here. The game is extremely short but it makes up for it on the enjoyable game play. I would wait till the game drops to around £20-£25 before purchasing it, but do not expect an engaging storyline.
Sneaking stealthily past your enemies is optional here, but in reality, the arcadey confront, chop and kill approach is what dominates. The box and the drum can return to hilarious effect, as well as a sub weapon option in the form of rocket launchers and various grenades, but the emphasis is undoubtedly on the blades and the variants you pick up from the 'Boss' battles.
Much has been made of the shortness of this game compared to previous incarnations, but I personally feel after the 'death by cut-scene' overkill of 'Guns Of The Patriots' the shortness of this outing is actually a breath of fresh air!
Its not perfect however. It does get a tad repetitive, and there is not much variety in the gameplay, the controls are quite frustrating at times especially the seemingly sentient camera control! Some of the VR Missions are damn near impossible - to me anyway.
The soundtrack is pretty much 'djent' or modern thrash metal! Which was a welcome change to the Inception-esque droning of so many other games and films today.
In terms of graphics, it's obvious that Platinum Game's engine isn't the best looking around. Kojima Production's "Fox Engine" is clearly stronger but still, the game doesn't look bad by any means and it runs SUPER smoothly. This game offers very fast paced combat that benefits those who take the time to learn how to parry, dodge and perform diferent attack moves throughout it's course. The boss fights are a lot of fun as well and the inclusion of stealth elements (for those who choose to play in that fashion) in most chapters, makes me want to play this game again even more so i can try it with different play styles. The story and the supporting characters aren't exactly strong in terms of quality but when playing Revengeance, that's probably the part you'll care less about any way.
To conclude, this is not a typical MGS game, but it is a great action game with crazy fast combat with some stealth and humorous moments that will remind you of other Metal Gear games making it a serious contender to be the best action game of 2013.
-The characters are not only flat, one-dimensonal and unsympathetic, the main hero is unrelatable and almost nothing of the MG universe has been utilized for this story. The constant mentioning of the Patriots is a cheap reminder of MGS4. Even the new characters seem more like caricatures than fleshed out creations, they hardly interact in the few story sequences and the whole cyborg angle makes it almost impossible to envision another proper MGS in the regular Solid Snake timeline. Even the most interesting and possibly deep character, Blade Wolf, is not nearly explored properly. The idea of a machine too human for human needs is genious, yet its not nearly told properly. What a shame for such a great character! Sam's motives aren't properly explained at all. I hear a DLC is planned, which is insane considering the importance of Sam's character within the main game. Having to complete a DLC to understand the main villain is not what MG stands for.
-Sunny as the only previous MGS character is poorly implemented and doesn't fit into the game at all. Her role could have been executed by any other protagonist just as well.
-Telling most of the stroy through codec seems cheap and is ultimately boring. I loved Codec before but after Revengeance I am beginning to hate ist. So much techno-babble, so little real point to it!
-The settings are plain boring and dull, the regular enemies almost ridiculously designed. Why go to Mexico only for a techno-sewer? Why evacuate Denver just so that no people have to be there?
-The graphics (at 720p, come on!!! MGS 4 was in Full HD five years ago!) are a joke, there are clipping and frame rate issues all the time, the Denver part looks like PS2 and metal walls show reflections of things that are not even in the same vicinity. There is no proper lighting engine robbing the game of any lifelike or remotely reaslistic appearance. MGS2 had better lighting and ambience than this!
-There is no lip synchronicity neither in the codec sequences nor in some in-game demos (Sam talking to Jack through the billboards in Denver!). MGS has always set a standard in terms of coherence and cinematic presentation, this game is a shadow of that promise for no reason whatsoever!
-While the hard rock music might have been a good idea at first, it is pushed so far in the game that I feel like a 15 year old in the middle of puberty playing the game. MG is worth more than this cheap imitation of a soundtrack. Where are the emotions, where is the tension and where the hell is the style?!?
-The voice acting falls flat this time around, even with Kris Zimmermann Salter involved. Quninton Flynn overacts Raiden almost into ridiculousness, Sundowner is more funny than threatening and George is hard to listen without your eyes closed. While Doktor and especially Blade Wolf are very well voiced, Doktor's appearance takes all realism away from the character and Wolf itself is rarely present or relevantly integrated into the story. Such a shame!
-Although realizing MGR being an action game and a departure from the regular series, I find it much too fast, hard and not at all rewarding. I do like the Zandatsu engine, it is quite cool to cut enemies like that, but it is too fast to give the player a true feeling of proper control and the combat rankings are so hard to beat that I constantly feel like a loser or idiot. I am not a bad gamer and at least I have cleared MGS 4 in its highest difficulty, in that game I had numerous moments of gratification and pride from defeating enemies and situations, which is a feeling I never ever got from Revengeance. Furthermore, the cool feeling of cutting "cyborgs" in half counteracts the feeling that someone doing that should in fact have: Guilt and remorse, a melancholic sadness and gravitas that gave the previous MGS-installments their proper impact and which this game terribly lacks. This is even discussed storywise in the Denver chapter, leading Jack to embrace his perverse nature completely and to keep slaughtering rather than changing himself for the better or at least properly questioning his approach. "Time to let her rip"?!?. What the hell is that about? After all, isn't MGS an anti-war game series? Don't get me wrong: I am not exactly a bleeding heart pacifist and I recognize the need for both a military and sometimes the use of force, but senseless killing is nothing I would like to endorse. The gaming industry has to recognize its responsibility concerning that with our without school massacres and I have my doubts that Platinum games have given it proper thought. Violence should not be portrayed as fun, not because some conservatives or reactionary media tell us it shouldn't, but because both a game and we as players shouldn't need to do it to that degree. It all depends on setting, while it might be OK in Dead Space, it feels quite barbaric here in MGR.
-SPOILER!!! Finally, the Pakistan part of the game featuring Metal Gear Excelsus and the Senator are a true travesty and a slap in the face for MGS fans like me. Excelsus is never even mentioned before, there is nothing but a cheap and highly illogical explanation for its existence and it does nothing but hurt the legacy of previous Metal Gear Tanks which, after all, give the whole series its name! Senator Armstrong is such a caricature I couldn't believe what I was seeing when I faced and defeated him. What this kind of character is doing in a series that has spawned Video game villains so three-dimensional most screenwriters can only dream of creating the likes of them in a flimic medium is beyond me. Taking Liquid Snake, The Boss, Ocelot, Mantis, Olga, Volgin or many others and comparing them to the Winds of Destruction and especially Armstrong is like day and night, they are not even in the same universe IMHO.
I know how much labour went into the game, how many people probably worked their butts of and that they tried to give it their best. However, I do not believe that the direction they took and the decisions they made were optimal. If there is a successor to this spin-off, I would like to encourage everyone to reevaluate what made and makes the Metal Gear series great and to include this into future installment in much more detail: The great characters, the fantastic and elaborate, relevant stories and the fine-tuned gameplay housed in a proper technical presentation. None of these is sufficiently present in Rising: Revengeance, I believe. The Phantom Pain will probably make Rising look like a student project concerning almost every aspect. I knew Mr Kojima creates Gold standards with most of his games but the difference in quality between MGS and MGR is staggering. To be completely honest, I don't enjoy to play this game very much, sadly!
Just in: DLC 1 "Jetstream Sam": What a moronic DLC! Advertised as a story DLC this episode covers almost nothing of Sam's motives. It shamelessly recycles the Blade Wolf fight, the Metal Gear Ray confrontation, the Mexico sewer system (now in Denver!) and countless enemies from the main game itself. It has the same shortcomings of the main game as well: sterile look and feel, no atmosphere whatsoever and moronic music all way through. I only wisch I could get my ten bucks back instead of having to spend my time playing through this crap! There is another DLC on it's way, this time featuring Blade Wolf. This time I will not for for it, though. I sincerely hope that MG:Rising will in fact not spawn a new spinoff series for MGS, because the more I play it the more I really start to loathe it. This piece should not even be allowed to carry the name Metal Gear!
