First and foremost the camera's sensor is very small and as such, needs a ton of light to produce an acceptable picture. If you're outside on a sunny day or on a fully lit set, this camera produces a great picture for the price. However you'll have to gain up considerably if you want to shoot indoors with natural light - a process which produces a more than usual graininess when compared to other similar sized sensor cameras.
This graininess however is unnoticeable until you get into post. This issue is mainly the fault of the led screen, which is probably the worst I've ever used in my entire professional career. It's not accurate and is very dim. This is definitely a place where JVC cut corners to save costs on this camera. The eyepiece is not much better so an external monitor is a must for this camera.
As other reviewers have mentioned, the camera goes down a few F stops as you zoom in. This feature was very annoying, and was even troublesome on a well lit set and outdoors. If you can keep the lens pulled out all the way you'll be fine.
The audio on this camera is pretty good all things considered. That is of course assuming that you use the included microphone handle and optional xlr boom mic. This is because the actual on-camera microphone is very thin sounding and picks up a lot of the camera noises. Going into this I didn't expect a great on camera mic, no one ever does, but it's worth mentioning.
This camera also features a ND filter. A nice feature that does work quite well, however I found myself needing that 1/64 filter more often than not. Unfortunately the camera was lacking this third filter.
There are some good things about this camera. The battery life is great. I got a good 3 hours of constant shooting before I started getting warnings. The overall feel of the camera is ok, it's not up to par with professional level cameras, but then again neither is the price, but I did find it to be acceptable for casual shooters. If you're an everyday kind of shooter look elsewhere for something more rugged.
The camera is quite large. Much larger than you would expect for a camera at this price. So for guys looking for a small and compact palm sized recorder, this camera is not for you. While it was light it was much bulkier than I was comfortable with making for a very unusually shooting experience.
All its short comings aside, this camera is a decent piece of equipment for the price. For those who shoot primarily outdoors or on a controlled well lit set, this camera will get the job done just fine. But if you're a true professional user who needs a camera that can easily adapt to different lighting situations and need the accuracy of a quality led screen, then honestly take my advice and look elsewhere. The price can be tempting and the looks can definitely be deceiving, but move along to another option as you will most likely not be happy.
Hey JVC I hope you read this and can fix some of these issues. If you do you could have a real winner on your hands here.
