Maleficent is a Hollywood fantasy film directed by Robert Stromberg and released by Walt Disney Pictures. The film stars Angelina Jolie. It also features Sharlto Copley, Elle Fanning, and Sam Riley.
Maleficent is a reimagining of the classic fairy tale Sleeping Beauty. This movie tells the story from the perspective of the supposedly evil witch Maleficent. The film begins with an elderly person narrating the story of the witch.
As a young girl, Maleficent falls in love with a young boy named Stefan, a peasant in the human kingdom. She lives in the powerful fairy kingdom in the Moors, bordering a human kingdom. Stefan loves her too, but he is highly ambitious and has dreams of becoming king one day.
When the human king invades the fairy territory, Maleficent defeats him. The angered king declares that he will make whoever kills the witch his successor. Stefan, his love overridden by his ambition, tricks Maleficent and captures her. He cannot bring himself to kill her. So, he cuts off her wings and provides this as a proof to the king that the young witch is dead.
Maleficent has a companion, a raven she rescued, named Diavel. This raven, a shapeshifter, keeps her informed of all that is happening in the human kingdom. When she learns that Stefan has been crowned king and he betrayed her to fulfil his ambition, she is filled with bitterness and the need for vengeance.
When the king begets a daughter, Maleficent attends the child’s christening ceremony uninvited. Here she curses the child that on her 16th birthday she will fall into a death-like sleep after pricking her finger in the spindle of a spinning wheel. When Stefan begs her to spare his daughter, she says that if the girl is kissed by someone who truly loves her, she will wake up.
Stefan then seizes all the spinning wheels in his kingdom, destroying many of them and storing away the rest in the deepest dungeons. He then puts the Princess Aurora in the care of three pixies and sends out his men to find and kill Maleficent.
Stefan is unable to penetrate the strong defences of the fairy kingdom. However, Maleficent herself grows fond of the young princess and watches over her from a distance. She begins to regret her vengeful curse and decides that she must protect the young princess at all costs.

Shot after stunningly lit and composed shot, the film is a visual classic from opening to fadeout. If you know even a few basics of how things are done, there are moments where your jaw drops open - and stays there - in amazed appreciation for what this team accomplishes. It veers delicately, sometimes like lightning, from warmth to laughs to concern to sorrow to tears to majesty and back again; building, building to one moment (just before the magnificent climax) that you suddenly know / hope is coming - about ten seconds before it does - which makes it even more magical and earns your gratitude for what they've done with this timeless fairy tale.
Every inch of the huge 3D screen displays an unbelievably rich collaboration in the joys of virtuoso film making destined to last as long as Disney's original, delivered by artists at the top of their crafts. Above them all: the remarkable Angelina Jolie (who also co-executive produced). A milestone in its genre!
