Product description

Product Description

The Mahabharata is some 3,500 years old and is the longest poem in any language. It is one of the founding epics of Indian culture and, with its mixture of cosmic drama and profound philosophy (one small section forms the BHAGHAVAD GITA) it holds aunique place in world literature. In this drastically shortened prose rendering, Narayan uses all his extraordinary talents to convey to a modern reader why this is such a great story. Filled with vivid characters, obsessed with the rise and fall of gods, empires and heroes, Narayan's MAHABHARATA is an enormously enjoyable experience and the perfect introduction to the otherwise bewildering Indian cosmology.

About the Author

RK NARAYAN's major works are all available in Modern Classics, including THE VENDOR OF SWEETS, TALKATIVE MAN and THE MANEATER OF MALGUDI.

R. K. Narayan's version self admittedly comprises of the essential story that forms the hundred thousand verse epic of the Mahabharata. Though the epic is colossal abounding in details on all topics, the core of the story which is essentially a story of war, is nevertheless brilliantly condensed by the author in the form of a gripping narrative. A timeless classic.

I love the Mahabharata, as a philosophical tale. It tells us about the history of Hind, and also tells us massive philosophies of life. Every situation in any mans life is directly or indirectly there in the Mahabharata. After reading my grandfathers old hindi version 10 years back, I went on to see peter brooks Mahabharata, I remember approximately it is a 6 hour movie, but it is fabulous. Today I got My R.K. Narayanan's version through very quick C.O.D delivery from Amazon. And I have not been able to put the book down every since. After reading 80 pages, I've taken a break to write the review. I must say the feel is so amazing, R.K. Narayan has done such a wonderful job in putting down in simple words, the basic and yet deep background of The Mahabharata. Even if you know the Mahabhatara, you can still read it again for a nice breeze of the trip of Mahabharata.
And If you want to get introduced to Mahabharata, this is a perfect start… Then you can go onto see the movies, and read more elaborate version…

Very Nice service from Amazon, the Book was packed in a weather proof packing, and has reached me in brand new perfect condition.

You often find book which have largely changed the original stories of Mahabharata … for the sake of "making sense" or they might seem to the author to have some deeper meaning or probably to make it "a child's read". R.K. Narayan has written the story without changing its originality and yet making it sensible ,interesting and gripping.
