Often times specially towards the end of his prison life, I had to take so many breaks as I could not read through misty eyes. What is so admirable about this wonderful human being is his vision, he never lost focus even in the ordeal of losing a normal family life. I guess this is where martyrs are born, they keep their personal life aside, in a pursuit of sanity for the masses at large.
His imprisonment was only because he stood by his principles. He did nothing wrong to get a life sentence. In his final speech before the verdict, the judges and the spectators bowed down their heads in shame. Ayn Rand talks about how man will rule over man and there is nothing the prey can do..It was Rands prophecy in action in Africa, in 1964. It is admirable to think, how a man behind bars, in a remote island, commanded so much power over the public for 27 years.
Like the public thought he would put his predators in their place, Mandela rose above. He put the past behind and moved forward and created a South Africa where there were equal rights and opportunities for whites, coloured and blacks. There was never a thought in his mind to punish the ones who wronged him and the other members of the ANC. This is maturity of character. This is where one sidelines all that is not worth and focus on the end result.
Its a shame how we humans treat our fellow humans in the name of caste, creed, colour and race. But people like Mandela, puts all of us to shame by Rising Above! A selfless and inspiring life he lived, and i hope if he is reincarnated, its back in South Africa, and will have a family he always wished for, which was snatched away from him by the madness of this world.
Touched, humbled, inspired and totally in awe of Madiba.
Amandla Awethu! as people shouted when he was released meaning, power to people!
I am a slow reader and added to it was the bulkiness of the book, but I could easily sail through with this master piece. The author has even managed to bring out humor every now and then even in such dark years of South African struggle.
At last, I can only raise my fist and say ANC salute to this magnificent book
the 98th birthday of Mr Mandela.
Nice book. I have always admired Late Mr Nelson Mandela. It removes the myth that South African blacks obtained their freedom
by non-violence. They did undertake acts of sabotage but made sure no humans were killed. Overall it enlightens those of us who caught up late with the freedom struggle of South African blacks.
I have gone through 'Roots' but this book supercedes it. One needs to go through the work of this legendry man to have a feel of the cercumstances.
