I have been using this speakers for about 11 months. The review is purely based on my personal taste. I use this speaker 60% for movies and 40% for music in a relatively smaller room.
SETUP
The speaker system is coupled with Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Surround 5.1 USB Sound Card. The audio sources used are majorly laptop with Creative player for music and VLC player for Movies. An android mobile phone with Poweramp is also used for casual music listening.
BUILD
The speakers are built with normal plastic with no perceptible imperfections. The driver grill /mesh is made up of synthetic fabric which can easily get damaged if pressed hard. The system has a down firing subwoofer which has no grill and can get patched if not handled carefully (I am not sure if this is a design practice followed for down firing subs not to compromise the audio quality). There is an impression on front and surround speakers that would resemble to the shape of a tweeter. This is a gimmick just to fool the user and actually there is no separate tweeters in front and surround speakers instead there is only a full range driver. There is no wall mount provision in speakers.
SOUND QUALITY
Despite the overall size, this speaker system sounds reasonably good if used in a smaller room. One should understand its limitations and use it. The ported sub-woofer does a decent job in handling low frequencies without distortions at volume levels up to 70% (You need to play around a bit on placement of the sub in suitable location to extract the most out of this tiny unit). This has a controlled well timed bass when compared to speakers of this price window. The unit has a separate bass adjustment knob, you need to adjust this based on the content that you play. (Always try to use good sources/ MP3 anything equal or above 320kbps. FLAC and other lossless formats will give better results)
The system seriously disappoints on mids, the center channel doesn’t show up its presence especially for movies where dialog is the key part which is majorly handled by the center channel. It is okey for certain genre of music. (Again based on my personal taste: I believe the mid-range frequency should be heard well and that’s where the soul of a music/ movie lies in. I changed the center channel to a creative speaker to get the best result)
The system handles the highs reasonably good although it doesn’t have dedicated tweeters
Overall it has a soft texture of sound in the entire range and manages the audio without losing the character of the content.
CONCLUSION
This is arguably one of the best speaker system in it's segment. This will work well in smaller size rooms. I would recommend this speakers for those who need decent sound at reasonable cost. This speaker system wouldn’t satisfy audiophiles.
Pros:
1) Good sub-woofer which can handle low frequencies reasonably well
2) Multiple inputs (5.1 channel and Stereo): really practical and useful
3) Good high frequency handling capabilities.
4) Dedicated Bass control knob
Cons:
1) Poor mid-range frequency handling capabilities
2) Poor center channel speaker.
3) No digital inputs, SPDIF etc (Can’t expect more at this price range)
4) Poorly designed speaker grill
5) No wall mount option
6) Shorter cables for surround speakers. You need to extend them.
FEW TIPS (Purely personal)
1) Use it in a smaller rooms if possible to get the best out of it.
2) Use a good sound card (I would recommend Creative sound cards)
3) Always use good contents/sources to get better output
4) Don’t try to push the speakers to its extremes.
5) Experiment a bit on placement of sub-woofer to get the best result (certainly makes a difference)
6) Try to upgrade the center channel (at your own risk ). The amplifier is good enough to handle the speakers of same impedance. The stock center channel speaker is disappointing.
