The last of us is set in the post-apocalyptic U.S., a pandemic virus breaks through the country and turns citizens into infected zombies. With all the possible efforts to develop a vaccine having failed, the only hope for the mankind in this bleak situation is Ellie - a girl who holds the key to cure the infection, and Joel - the man who is responsible for protecting Ellie. Will they be able to make it out alive of such a belligerent condition?
What makes the last of us a beautiful game is the way it adds life to the above setting. The game is brimming with every intricate emotion one cannot even imagine in a setting where death is lurking in the shadows in every possible corner you go. Straight away it touches your heart with its loading screen music and holds your undivided attention with its prologue. It makes one bleed its heart out for Joel's loss and you soon realise you have a spot for him in your heart! Since the game focuses on 'kill to survive' theme you can't help but to sympathise with Joel for miserably torturing and killing goons and innocent people. However, the show stealer in the game is Ellie, a teenage girl who not only acts as a crime partner by being a helpful side kick but also a shadow who does not leave Joel even when it is dark. She has a golden heart inside her raw and brutal personality. She shows all signs of life by getting mad at Joel, saving his life, asking questions about never seen before animals and getting ecstatic after taking down a group of thugs. Her curiosity to explore life and finding reasons to smile even in the most lethal situations makes one fall in love with her. It is a stellar sight the way both of them hold themselves and each other for the sake of survival. After a certain point of time one actually feels how their bond turns deep into a father-daughter relationship. With scintillating acting performances by every character in the game, the game ensures that they leave a lifetime impact on you. No other game comes close to the way the game makes you bond with its characters.
As far as the gameplay is concerned, it is breath-taking! It makes your heart beat whenever you get to face the infected i.e. clickers in the game and makes you regret for blowing your cover. 'Stealth' is a necessity and not a luxury in the last of us. Even a slight sound of hurriedness is caught by its AI with accuracy and in no time you would find enemies running after you. What makes the game even more difficult and intense is the amount of supplies it offers. Unlike uncharted where you have tonnes of bullets to go on a shooting spree, this game makes you regret every bullet you spend on killing your enemies as they are very few. You have to scrounge for them by visiting every corner of every place you go. So not exploring places for materials to craft things or for a handful of bullets is not an option if you have to survive in this game. The game also gives a choice with what you wish to craft with supplies you have sneaked from right under the nose of a clicker. Either craft medical kits or molotov cocktails with same set of supplies. It also has a weapon upgradation system which can be done by collecting parts from various places you search. The only way this game helps you out is by providing a environment scanning senses to Joel which detects the enemy presence and location around him. Apart from that don't expect much help from the game.
If you think things are going quite easy or 'gamy' with scanning system and wish to live off the edge, try beating this game out on 'Grounded' difficulty which makes this game worst nightmare. There is no health indicator, bullets indicator and enemy location indicator to help out. You have to plan out each and every bullet and supply, whether to exhaust them right in the beginning of the game and be at your enemies' mercy in the end or avoiding them altogether so that you have that little choice that you have 'earned' of shooting them up in the ending of the game. Whether it is graphics, narrative, characters or gameplay, the game delivers a perfect score on every aspect it touches. The only stutter it offers is in enemy AI. Just when you are intensely involved in a fist fight with a thug you notice that little loophole in AI as it behaves abruptly and punches you out of the blue. Also it tracks down Joel relentlessly while completely ignoring Ellie or any other character even if they walk right across the enemy.
With mind blowing acting performance, heart-melting narrative and intense gameplay experience, the last of us is a pinnacle of story telling and surely holds an irreplaceable place in everyone's hearts who has played it. This one is a game of generation and the best one ever created.
Naughty Dog surpasses its own benchmarks of excellence and pulls out a gem out of the hat with this one.
10/10
With the "Uncharted" series, "Naughty Dog" had established themselves as one of the most well-known game developers. And with "The Last Of Us", they have pushed the field of creativity simply to an another level!! As games are usually another source of entertainment and a hobby for most people, where they can just invest some particular time and energy in order to have leisure and fun, but with a game like "The Last Of Us", one has to invest more than their physical energy as this game aims to challenge and move you in various stages of its gameplay!!
The story is simple, in a post-pandemic world, where two survivors "Joel" and "Ellie" cross their paths with each other, having no connection in any aspect, they begin to battle together and what follows is an ultimate journey for survival which covers sacrifice, courage and what defines a human in a land without any humans, regardless if they have soul or not!!
Initially released for the "PlayStation 3" which became the "Best Game" of "Last Generation", the "Remastered Version" has its own reasons which are worth considering, the most primary reason being "The Game" itself!!
What makes the game so effective and engaging is the realistic-looking world, which looks more beautiful with improved textures and frame rates and above all, the "performances" and the "gameplay" which are the "main highlights" of this game!!
The equation between Joel and Ellie is so moving and realistic that sometimes, you would be moved to think on how relationships are not just created, it just happens with the force of nature which one can't deny!! Their scenes with each other are truly the most integral in the game!!
And the gameplay is something with which you can become addicted, as you might become angry and furious when you might get killed at some portions or the other!! Such is the impact of the game that you just want to finish every "infected" in your way!!
Special mention goes to the "Soundtrack" which is so mesmerizing and soothing to your ears that you would find yourself in "awe". It is pleasant to the ears whenever the soundtrack comes!!
With the ability to play in "4K Resolution" and "1080p Resolution" at "60 FPS", Naughty Dog have done a remarkable effort in resurrecting this game for the "PlayStation 4" which can be considered by both the "New" as well as the "Old Players" to add in their "Game Library".
What makes it more unique is the inclusion of the "DLC"(i.e. "The Last Of Us: Left Behind") in the "Remastered Version" which covers the story of "Ellie" separately which can be played once you would complete the "Main Story" which in itself is magnificent!!
What else you can ask for, a "Game" and a "Mini-Game" included in "One Disc". With an intelligent gameplay which requires your physical and mental attention, with the performances of the characters which are emotionally-charged and with the beautiful soundtrack, which would be etched in your memory whenever you might load or play this game, this is one of the "Best Games" ever made.
It is not just a game which is meant to be played, it is meant to be experienced which might be something you may not experience in other games of this or other "genres" as well.
And with "The Last Of Us 2" approaching near and near, one thing can be said for sure that "Naughty Dog" will not disappoint as they always deliver something impactful which is now hugely recognised with games like these!!
A must-have game for all who have a PS4 and who want to buy a "PS4"!! Those who have played this before, you wouldn't be disappointed with the "Remastered Version" especially if you want to play the "DLC" which wasn't included previously!!
Hope this review has been helpful to you.
