The main example in the first part of the book - building an auth app - is something that comes 'for free' in Laravel 5. What's the point of learning a framework if you're not going to use it! My advice is to be patient and wait for the documentation that will help you take advantage of what 5 has to offer.
This also is definitely not a book for beginners. you most likely will also need to understand
in order to get the most of this book.
