But, from almost the very beginning, the steps to accomplish tasks did NOT work on my new HDX! The MAJORITY of most basic action icons, pull-down menus, etc. are NOT LOCATED where the book says they are. So, for ALMOST EVERY FUNCTION DESCRIPTION, I had to go to the Web and search for how to do it on MY MODEL. In some cases, it was quick… in others, I couldn’t find any answers at all. Since I didn’t know if ANY of the instructions would work in the book, I had to stop and TEST EACH ONE, then look elsewhere if it didn’t work.
So, IF you have an OLDER model of Fire HDX, this book may be helpful. BUT, if your Fire HDX has O/S of 5 or higher (which ALL NEWER models have), then this book is pretty much a waste of time
In fairness, this is true of ANY help guides – they go out of date quickly as soon as any operating system has a major update. But I quick checked the other 4 books I purchased… and NONE of them showed the correct BASIC function locations for my HDX 8.9 – EVEN WHEN THEY SAID “Updated” in late 2015. A quick way to check whether one of the HDX Guides ARE CURRENT for YOUR Fire is to quick check the book to see if the Help for the BOTTOM of the SCREEN functions shows a LEFT ARROW, THEN a CIRCLE, then a SQUARE. If your screen also shows these (instead of a House picture and Search magnifier), then that book should at least be more helpful.
It would have been SO HELPFUL if Amazon at least downloaded a 1-2 page CHEAT SHEET with each Fire showing BASIC FUNCTIONS LOCATIONS. That way it would be easy to update instead of having to incorporate into an entire manual (the manual downloaded was not very helpful at all). And, although I did use MayDay help a few times (most good experiences and helpful), I couldn’t expect them to have to answer EVERY question that came up.
So, IF you are learning from scratch, like me, the current help books for Fire HDX (even stating 8.9) are a waste of money, other than to get an idea of what functions are available… just not HOW to do them.
