What do you do when your family becomes the enemy?
When Kate Steiner awakes from a year-long coma, her first thoughts are for her baby son. No longer a baby, however, Sam is being cared for by Kate’s parents, far away on the south coast. Kate should be reassured, but this knowledge fills her with a sickening dread. Getting back on her feet is now Kate’s top priority – she’s desperate to see Sam and hold him safe in her arms once again. But recovering from a head injury is frustratingly slow, and soon Kate is frantic with worry. Why hasn’t her mother brought Sam to see her, or replied to any of her letters? And why will no one talk about the circumstances that led to Kate’s injuries?
By the time Kate is ready to make the long journey to Cornwall she can hardly contain her excitement, or her rising sense of fear. Back in Corrin Cove, her beloved Sam is waiting for her, but so are the childhood memories Kate tried so hard to escape … With each moment that passes, it becomes clear that reclaiming her son isn’t going to be as straightforward as Kate had imagined, and when devastating news arrives that changes everything, grandmother and daughter are suddenly cast against each other in a fight that neither can win.
If Kate is to protect her son and be reunited with him again, she must battle the ghosts of her past and fight to clear her name. But when your own family becomes the enemy, there really is nowhere to turn …

It is a book that totally immerses you, and some of the characters are great to get to know, but it was a bit of a slow burn and half way through I started to lose interest in the storyline. However, I persevered and the ending was worth waiting for.

It was interesting to see the two sides of the argument, and to see clearly how each side felt about the other, and about poor young Sam, caught in the middle.

This author deals with subjects that resonate and not always in a comfortable way, but she does it so well by weaving the threads into a wonderful tapestry of characters and situations.
Her books never disappoint.
