The celebrated author Dr. C.K. Gariyali, talks about the creation of the Sunkist valley of Kashmir by Sage Kashyapa for settling intellectual rishis and scholars, the ‘Kashmiri Pundits’. She narrates the saga of their glorious past, followed by centuries of Islamic tyranny, being subjected to rape, loot and killings, culminating in their exodus from their home of five thousand years. Yet, the book, with great pride, celebrates and documents the most ancient cultural heritage of this resilient community for the posterity to preserve and emulate.

The book brings out the horrid events with historic perspective. The narrative brings out the facts without intense bitterness. Since the author has lived there during her childhood and adolescence the description is that authentic.

Was it a pure coincidence that the first lady IAS officer of the valley, born almost immediately after independence, bred and brought up in Kashmir chose Kanyakumari as her karmabhoomi and then came out with this book at a time when Kashmir has been re-integrated with India through the removal of the temporary and transitory provisions of Articles 35A and 370 of the Constitution? The book is based on the real ground work done meticulously by personal visits and contacts with all persons who played various important roles in ameliorating the lot that befell Kashmiri Pandits (KPs). The book gives a peep into all the miseries that the KPs had to face post-exodus, for which the state government was no less responsible than the militants. (Was there a collusion of sorts or a tacit understanding?) At the same time, the book describes very lucidly almost all aspects of Kashmir and the its people, its history from ancient days, as its title suggests, right till the present day; its culture; its ethos, and above all the latest situation prevailing on various fronts. The book has come out very timely and is filling a void in the life of all KPs, especially the youngsters born and brought up during the days of forced exile. The author connects very naturally as like them only she too has been “Away away from home” (apologies Dr Alban) craving for the mountains and the fountains back “home”. "I'm reading this book right now and loving it!" (Apologies Cheryl Strayed).

Kashmir- the land of kashyapa" written by Dr C.K Gariyali (73 batch IAS officer ) is a brilliant read on the ancient river valley civilization - the kashmiri pundits. The book gives the reader a complete glance on the extraordinary lifestyle of them, their true devotion to lord shiva and on how kashmir served as a booning place for the growth of Buddhism and Hinduism (shaivism). Throughout the past 6 decades, violence has caused chaos in the lives of the people yet they've thrived and been resilient. The author also takes us through her childhood spent with her grandmother how peaceful her life was living In close kith and kin with her neighbours to the exodus caused by the communal extermits led to the brutality of the valley. A must read to all of us on how the ancient civilization and the vitasta was lost. As a 24 year old, I did so much research on the book and purchased it. I must say it was worth every penny.
" If we had taken guns instead of pens" was my favorite catch phrase of the book.

It is commonly said that before one gets dissolved into this infinite Universe or say good-bye to this world, one should not miss an opportunity to visit the heaven or the paradise of this planet, Kashmir. I kept hearing, umpteen number of times , the saga of displaced Kashmir pandits and their struggles through some readings and sometimes from news channel discussions but I never felt the magnitude of the devastation due to the forced exodus of Kashmir pandits.
The conundrum has been answered in this brilliant book. The research, the nuances of historical facts, the DNA of peace loving people and the valley's sounas, aromas of the gardens, aura of the spiritual places and people have been aptly articulated like a tapestry. Kudos to Madam Gariyaliji for her impeccable style and flow ! It is very gripping and very intriguing from the start... A must read book to know the origin of issues, lifestyles, the methods of oppressive clans and the struggles of every Kashmiri Pandit . Plunging into the brilliant Introduction given by Mr.Vasudevan, MD of Equitas small finance bank on this brilliant work is commendable and thought provoking.
Highly recommended and a must read book.
Thanks to the Authour of this book Shri C.K.Gariyaliji for an outstanding contribution.

Dr. C.K. Gariyali IAS (retd) has written yet another classic book. This time on a topic that is close to her heart and in which she is passionate about. In 10 chapters and annexures, she brings out the proud and the unique history, heritage and the culture of the Kashmiri pandits, herself a Kashmiri Pandit. Their culture can be traced back to 4,500 years. Thus, every Kashmiri Pandit seeks to breathe his/her last in Kashmir. Among the Kashmiri Pandits, she brings out how her family adopted secular and non-discriminatory practices. She says these value were inculcated deeply in herself and she practised them throughout in her day to day life.
This is a wonderful book and can have a transformative effect on the reader to have secular and non-discriminatory values. I strongly recommend this book to be kept in every home.

The book narrates how the Valley of Kashmir was created by Rishi Kashyapa to be inhabited by intellectual scholars, the Kashmiri Pundits. It traces their great contribution to Sanskrit language and Hindu and Buddhist thought. It also recounts the untold miseries and tyrannies unleashed upon them after the advent of Muslim rule in Kashmir in 14th century, which again resurfaced after the independence of India leading to their exodus in 1990 from their home of 5000 years. Book also talks about their ancient heritage and culture, their pilgrim centres, their saints and sages, their fairs and festivals which the author has painstakingly documented for the posterity. Reading this awesome work as a Kashmiri Pundit I feel moved, saddened as well as proud.

Reminiscence of a great woman on Kashmiri Pundits diaspora

This is a fascinating book by Dr C.K. Gariyali IAS (retd) depicting the history, tribulations and hardships faced by the Kashmiri pundits. The book is full of snippets of her personal journey into Kashmir, in old Delhi and beyond.
Written with much erudition, interspersed with the mythical and mystical stories of the people, makes this a lovely exposition not only for Kashmiris but the vast number of the Indian diaspora. Inspired by her noble parents, Chander Kanta draws lessons from a vast number of people; their positive resilient spirits and liberating efforts.
The book begins with a foreword by Vice Chancellor Raj Nehru. The book is also introduced by Shri P N Vasudevan, the innovative banker of Equitas. Together with Dr C.K. Gariyali, they do a lot for empowering women. The book spans ten chapters and brings clarity to the concepts through nine annexures, a bibliography and glossary. There are beautiful, old paintings and photos of Kashmiri people which are artistic and aesthetic.
The chapter I enjoyed the most was the 2nd one, ‘Stories of Srinagar – the Abode of Kashmiri Pundits’. More specifically, the section on “life at Narpristann Ghat”, her birth in her grandmother Tara’s home, the customs they followed, and the humane values instilled in her spirit, took roots there.
She illustrates this transformative period in an autobiographical style and with an astute memory of all these incidents. To quote, “she was named ‘Chander Kanta’ by their family priest who predicted that she will shine like the moon”.
True to this prophecy, she shines a bright light on this arduous journey, drawing lessons from the inspiring spiritual influence of Buddha, Hinduism, Sikhism, Islam and the confluence of wisdom brought by Adi Shankara & Lakshman Joo Raina.

Excellent history of Kashmir, the land and its people, for over 5000 years

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this excellent book, by author Ms. C K Gariyali, in which she shares the history of Kashmir, the lived experience of the people of the land, the historic violent invasions and the continued integrity and resilience of the people. The current struggles of the Hindu Kashmiri Pandits who were displaced from their homeland and who are attempting to preserve their wisdom and ways in displacement camps is well characterized. Most people are not aware of the trials and sufferings of this group because of the grace, dignity and stoicism with which they have conducted themselves in their tragic displacement. I found the history going back 5000 years, the millenia old records of Sanskrit scholarship and their relevance to the lived practices of the Hindu population to be very meaningful and informative. The historic and millenia old cultural links between the peoples of Kashmir and peninsular India are well narrated. The description of local landmarks and their cultural links to historical events is fascinating. In all, this is an unique book that characterizes the historical and the human elements, intertwined in a fascinating manner.

This book is very special to me as I have spent my childhood in this beautiful place.
This is a great book for knowing the history of Kashmir and the origin of Kashmiri Pandits. After reading this book, I realized that Kashmiri Pandits have been a victim of Muslim tyranny for generations. Our forefathers suffered and so did we.
I would recommend this book for everyone to read as most of us don't know the facts about this place.
