Shakuntala, Satyavati and now Kannaki.
It's always amazing to read male authors write about strong women with candour and admiration. I read Kannaki way back as a children's comic book, but was bewildered by its complexity. Mr. Utkarsh definitely simplifies the plot without destroying its beauty.
The plotline and characters cannot be judged by today's feminist standards. Kannaki may arouse impatience for her meek acceptance of the strayed husband, but the era was totally different. She doesn't merely tag along, but gently & firmly sets him on a constructive path after his colossal blunder. Her climactic deification is an indicator of the Indian mindset (still relevant) of elevating a woman to a goddess before she gets her due.
The language is simple. The poetry is charming.

"O King I am glad you are setting up a temple for me, but more than that, I want you to remember what I stood for and what I died for”- from Kannaki’s anklet an epic from south of the Vindhyas by Utkarsh Patel
Kannaki’s anklet is a poignant story of a virtuous lady turned into Sati (goddess) with the power of her chastity. As a reader, Kannaki’s narrative and poetic expressions of various emotions by the author, succeeded in giving wings to my imagination making me visualise an era when true love, piousness, chastity and righteousness existed.
This story has introduced me to one more gem of Indian literature which is largely unexplored by majority of the readers and admirers of Ramayana & Mahabharata, except for South India as it’s an ancient Tamil epic. This is one book which will simplify for you the layers of a timeless Tamil epic known as Shilappadikaram.
Kannaki’s adversities and her acceptance towards them would be intriguing or perplexing to modern mind, very much like the challenges and sacrifices suffered by our popular epic heroines Savitri, Draupadi and Sita. But it is significant to understand how it speaks of a different mileu of ancient beliefs and values based on the faith for divine mechanism of justice beyond human laws due to which eventually Kannaki, a woman born with humanly desires was extolled as a Goddess who is revered until today in Tamil Nadu.
Thank you Utkarsh for bringing this story to us and kudos to the effort made. 🙂

This is one of the best ways you can get introduced to this classic poem. The story is dark but edifying. It is about living right and living fearlessly. Kannaki is a heroine no one will forget in a hurry after reading this book. Patel has described her character most beautifully. I am not familiar with the original, so I can't compare, but it was, for me a wonderful way to get to know this poem.
The life in Puhar, the arduous journey to Madurai and the aftermath are all brought to life in simple language. It is so interesting that I couldn't put the book down.

Bought it as a gift fr my Mother in law. She thought it was just another fantasy love story. And then she was glued o and loved it. Its a Mythological tale of a woman from Tamil Nadu. She said the language was nice and the story was something which every Indian woman would relate to.
Glad she enjoyed the book.

She is an epitome of virtue
She is tender yet strong
She feels pain and yet vanquished everything for the pain
She is Arundhati’s daughter.
She is Kannaki.
Kannaki’s Anklet by Utkarsh Patel is a must read! Lyrical, narrative, dramatic and yet so very much sticks to the experiences of each of the characters – this book is a delight for anyone who wants to know the epic from the south of the Vindhyas. Not many know this tale and I was glad that now I know it. Religion, poetry, story and culture. The feminist perspectives might not go down well in the modern day contexts of sacrifices – but put in an image of an ideal woman who has the power to burn the world at her will when she experiences injustice.
Interestingly, according to the epic, Kannaki was only human until around the time of her sacrifice, people accorded her the status of Goddess. Today there are temples dedicated to her.
As is the way with epics like Ramayana and Mahabharata, Utkarsh has not made it too long and narrative, infusing songs and poetry in between to give this book a delightful mix of poetry and prose. That he has translated and brought this hereto unknown epic to the common readers is a great feat considering the brevity and the scope for engaging read contained within the book.
All in all, a highly recommended book to read!

1st of all, I'd like to admit that I never knew there were epics other than Ramayana and Mahabharata!
This book was my introduction to Shilappadikaram- a Tamil epic.
The writing is so graphic- you can imagine the banter between Kannaki and her friends before she gets married, the scenic landscapes of Puhar, their journey to Madurai.
Love the characterization- Kannaki as the devout wife, unfailing in her resolve may seem out of place in today's times, but she connects with you. Kovalan with all his flaws and transgressions still seems endearing and Madhavi the mistress wins you over with her pure love. These characters are real, they make mistakes, they go against norms, but you cannot call them villains because you see the goodness in them.
Amazing book and writing.
