JBL is a name I've come to trust in sound quality and these speakers don't disappoint, the subwoofer produces a decent bass response and the satellites provide clear and crisp sound. The bass and treble control on the unit are ok to customize the sound but in combination with a third party equalizer program the sound can be tailored so this system sounds phenomenal.
I was a bit wary, due to all the less than stellar reviews, but since it was exactly what i needed for my computer setup and I've had a series of JBL speaker systems I really liked in the past I took the plunge. It's a bit pricey as these things go, but well worth it for the quality of the construction and the overall sound quality. I am very happy with my purchase and would highly recommend.
I liked the original creature speakers much more, even if there was some fuzz sometimes when you had the computer off. Having the sound actually start coming through the speakers without a half second delay means more to me than whatever reason they added the shut off feature.
From the very beginning even to today the sound has always sounded good, HOWEVER, if you even slightly touch one of the satellites that speaker will go out. And God forbid if you touch the subwoofer. The whole system will go down or you'll loose the subwoofer and controller but the left satellite will continue. Every time my wife cleans the house I have to fiddle with all the wire to get the connection to be just right so that I can get that great sound back.
Maybe youll be lucky and wont have this problem but this set is going into the kids playroom and I am replacing them.
I love the Harmon Kardon Speakers II but there is little in the way of subwoofer control. However, I have had those speakers for twice as long and they still sound great and I dont have any technical issues with them either. I recommend those over these.
Using this S-video extension didn't work very well. I did get sound from the speaker but I couldn't increase, decrease, or mute the volume. The volume controls on the speaker were useless. Extending the left satellite speaker cable may not be a problem because it uses an RCA audio cable and the speaker has no volume controls. But if you want the controls on the right speaker to work properly, you must connect only the cable directly attached to the speaker. You can't extend it.. I found a way around this by re-routing both of the cables. They aren't placed where I would prefer them to be, but they work. If JBL had provided longer cables, hooking up these speakers would have been no problem at all. I would rate the performance and the appearance of the Creature III's at five stars. Because the cables aren't long enough, it can be a problem placing them where someone may want to. For that reason, I downgraded my rating to four stars.
