Called 'Ouvertüren'; in Germany because they began with a large-scale overture à la française, Bach's Orchestral Suites offer a unique synthesis of the French and Italian styles. The Leipzig Cantor did not content himself with a mere set of amiable dances for his 'Collegium Musicum', he revived the genre in his own manner - accenting the contrasts, refining the orchestration and spicing them up with counterpoint. On this new specially-priced set, the Freiburger Barockorchester offers benchmark performances of these indispensable treasures of the Baroque.
BUILDING A LIBRARY RECOMMENDATION 'this 2011 recording isn t short of awards, but I m very happy to give it yet another. As a snapshot of just how good baroque orchestral playing is these days, and of course, as a showcase for Bach s four glorious suites, it would add lustre to anyone s collection.' --Mark Lowther BBC Radio 3 CD Review, 6th December 2014

One thing uneasy to me is the coupling and order of the suites. CD1 contains suite no.4 and no.2. CD2 contains no.1 and no.3. Usually cuoplings are no.2 ,no.3 and no.1,no.4. At least no.1,no2 and no.3,no.4 seem natural to me.
