I admire talented people who can master many unrelated fields, and Dr Jagdish Chaturvedi is a great example of someone I look upto . Not only is he an ENT surgeon, he is also a stand up comedian, and a successful author as well. What and makes this even more remarkable is that he seems to do all this so effortlessly! I have enjoyed reading the new edition of his book, Inventing Medical Devices - a Perspective from India. This is a great resource for anyone who wants to apply their skills to help to improve healthcare in India. It's very simply written, comprehensive, and based on his real life experiences. We all agree that the healthcare system is broken, but rather than try to copy expensive solutions from the West, which are often irrelevant for our needs, we need to develop home grown solutions which are appropriate for our environment. The problem is that engineers often don't understand clinical problems, and doctors don't understand how to commercialize their ideas. This book provides a great framework, which allows both doctors and engineers to work together, so that they can create low cost effective devices which will work well within India, Dr Chaturvedi walks his talk, and has successfully patented and commercialized a lot of devices. He is a great inspiration for entrepreneurial doctors and engineers, who need to work together to explore and exploit the opportunities in this space, which has so much potential!
This is a wonderful book, written by a serial physician enterpreneur. The book provides a clear outline on the pathways of medical innovation from the generation of an idea to creation of prototype to successful commercialisation in India. Personally, this book also helped clarify many misconceptions I had as I walk through my enterpreneurial journey. I am so glad I found this book early in my journey. The author speaks from personal experience and provides a great resource for further reading, funding and networking contacts.
I would strongly recommend this book to anyone who is starting out in the field of medical technology innovation. The lessons provided here will help you to anticipate, plan and start thinking early about all the potential obstacles in the development of a new medical technology product.
Good effort . On the whole he makes innovative ideas leading to reality so tough with so many financial roadblocks that , if you are an innovator , in the very first two chapters you feel disheartened . He has his own view points and some of which any inventor would not agree . The book could have been better . Nevertheless some of the information he gives are good tips for new innovators .
One of the best books out there for inventing medical devices and making its commercialization a success. However, the structured approach mentioned in the book can also be used for any other product and technology innovations. The book is quite informative and a wonderful resource for some quick reference as an entrepreneur in India. I liked every bit of it. Since few of my friends and I have been planning of how to startup with an idea and a product, this book gave some good guidance. Superb!
One of the most interesting book out there talking about the systematic problems in India and how to solve the problems. The author has covered all the important topic that are needed to gain comprehensive knowledge relating to Medical technologies and innovations. The book has been written in a simple and lucid language and the method of explaining things is quite clear. I liked the approach used to make reader understand what the author wants to convey. A must read for anyone who wants to embark on an entrepreneurial journey.
