About the Author

Dr. E.M. Rao, MA (SW), LL B, Ph.D. (TISS) is Professor - Personnel Management and Industrial Relations, XLRI, Jamshedpur, India (from 1997 to date) and Chairperson MDP and Consultancy, XLRI. He held the office of Dean (Academics), XLRI from 2001 to 2004. Born in 1945, Dr. Rao was a practising professional for more than 20 years as a Personnel and Industrial Relations Manager and was associated with several organisations including Warner-Hindustan Ltd, VST Industries Ltd and IDL Industries Ltd, Hyderabad and later as an Advocate and Management Consultant. Dr. Rao was with the ICFAI Business School, Hyderabad for two years as a Professor in Management before joining XLRI in 1997. His areas of specialisation include industrial relations, labour legislation, disciplinary action, industrial jurisprudence, interpretation of statutes, labour law applications, collective bargaining, managerial skills, conflict resolution and negotiation skills, time management, empowerment and delegation, career planning and development. Dr. Rao has published more than 20 papers in reputed journals on various aspects of human resource management, industrial relations and labour law. He prepared a discussion paper on Dispute Settlement in India in 1998 for ILO. Dr. Rao has edited the sixth edition of O.P. Malhotra's the Law of Industrial Disputes, 2004.
