A study of the institution of the President of India, this book is based on the author's term as Deputy Secretary to the seventh president, Giani Zail Singh. In particular, it examines the President's role when authoritarian governments are voted in power. Things are all the more challenging for a president with a popular prime minister who has an overwhelming majority, as happened in the case of Zail Singh and Rajiv Gandhi.

K.C. Singh joined the Indian diplomatic service in 1974 and retired in May 2008 as secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs. Besides serving in Cairo, New York and Ankara, he was deputy secretary to the President of India (1983-87). He was Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates (1999-2003) and to Iran (2003-05).

This is one of the most pointless books I have read in recent times. Probably worse than NK singh s book. Many of these bureaucrats believe they have a story to tell . Problem is most of their narrative does not add to what is already publicly known. The thought process , what went into taking a decision, who said what and why , beneath the line stories. I am sure we want to know the gossip but we also want to know the streams of thought. The men of steel were they really men of steel or just plain men of straw and didn’t have in them the strength to make a difference. The book s editing is also really bad. Keeps going back and forth and you need to double check are you reading same thing back and forth. The hagiography of Zail singh is also awful. The intermittent pot shots at BJP government is also uncalled for. May be he did not get any sinecures and hence you angst. All in all , just not worth !

Bad book. The first part of the book is dedicated to an explanation of the Constitution. The second part is where some things related to the President are explained. But this is more of an explanation from the author about random things that he did. Badly written.
